Does anyone know if there's some sort of "easy" way to test if a surface mount cpu is bad, or is it just seeing if it stays cold or overheats? I have a Point Blank (actually, Gun Bullet, but it's the same thing!) pcb which does nothing apart from the 68020 cpu getting quite hot after a minute or so, so i'm guessing it's faulty in some way. Also a few 74 series chips near some of the memory get quite hot as well, so i'm guessing maybe they're toast also. The rest of the customs and roms etc. all stay cold, so i'm thinking the board's not even being initialised. The 68020 is a 100 pin QFP type, MC68EC020FG25 if I remember correctly.
Cheers :)

Check activity on the address / data bus either on the CPU or on the roms / ram. Heat on its own is not a conclusive indicator of chip failure. If the CPU ends up in a tight loop it can also cause it to get overly hot.
