I keep meaning to design a little box that does cross hatch and some basic tests using a micro controller or maybe an arduino with a little daughter card.... I'm sure something like this would be very useful.

I'm confused, how is the audio file creating that display on the scope?

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

He's using the left and right audio to create x and y signals.... obviously all pre calculated and rendered....

Here's a similar thing with laser galvos and audio file driven.

Amazing what images a stereo sound output can make.

I got a fair way building this system myself out of a cheap PCI sound card, but then I ended up getting a Pangolin system for "cheap". Well cheap for laser hardware that is.

I'd love to be able to program some cool effects like the 'scope demo shows though. My best effort is this with my CPU tester, an Asteroids PCB and a polar coordinate math library.

I used the YouScope demo to test a vector monitor a while ago, and it did what I wanted. The monitor wasn't an arcade one, though, it was an HP one with electrostatic deflection. Since YouScope only uses audio frequencies, an arcade vector monitor with magnetic deflection ought to be OK too.

...except that the output level from a sound card probably isn't high enough to drive the monitor's X-Y inputs directly, so you'd need an amplifier in there. Should have thought before posting!
