Prepare to BE raided

OK, first things first.

I never thought, me, little old OCB – the most amateur of amateur collectors/conservationists – would be writing a Warehouse Raid report.

It’s not happened yet, in negotiation and planning phase – but my pinball mate Jo and I are hopeful and excited!

I spotted the “closing down” post of an operator – was sad to see it, and offered to help out getting him out his warehouse. Seems he’d already lined up some buyers for cabs, but there are others needing a good home. There are no working cabs, everything is in from bad to awful state. That, and some working/not working CRTs and chassis.

Normally it’s my mate Jo, a very active pinball collector and underground repair dude here in Belgium who finds stuff. He has a 1001 different search queries on various “free ad” sites. It’s through him I found my nearly mythical Atari Tournament Table. Which, funnily enough – if you do a search on “Atari tournament table” on google, look at images – around the 10[sup]th[/sup]one, that’s my Atari on his driveway JHint…the one with the orange squeegie cloth at the side….

The OP has put some stuff on Facebook, that’s been reserved – and other stuff he’s not, that I’ve spotted via a video he sent me privately.

The good.

I can’t say the best stuff, as I presume he isn’t parting with them. If he will, I’ll be a happy bunny! Nothing jaw-dropping like a minty R360 still in bubblewrap, just a couple of nice looking very early 80s cabs, obviously missing a fair bit.

The middling.

A couple of mid 70s Bally TTL games, that have a t’interweb history going back more than 10 years for those actual cabs. They didn’t work then, and still don’t work now. We will take them for no other reason than it’s our duty as arcade lifestyle/conservationists to save them from “hyperspin hell”. Not that they would, they’re so fugly they’d probably be skipped.

There’s half a dozen generic cabs not already spoken for that we will take and do “something” with. Worst case is LCD and 20 million in one with 50 button control panel.

The bad.

There are genuinely cabs that – looking at the photos – even I would skip. I’ll see when I’m on site whether they’re even worth the effort of transporting.

Raid0

So, this is my first raid. I know the OP has been a sharp cookie for years – what’s left is quite simply “dross”. I don’t blame him. There’s next to no money in the “cab” business.

Logistic wise – that’ll be a laugh.

My pinball mate is in the process of building a 40m2 annex – but it’ll be the middle of next year before it’s there.

I, after several years of juggling parenthood of 3 young kids, running a stressful IT business, trying to maintain a not particularly well built 70 yr old house etc am trying to catch up and get my man-cave into a useful state again. For the past year or so it’s been a disaster. The past few weeks have been great, my workshop now looks almost like a workshop, freeing up space in the garage. A few hours more and I have permanent space for 3 more cabs! Yay, except – I’ve already bought 3 cabs for those spaces….wife doesn’t know about 2 of them…..but they’ve still to arrive…

We also have the “how to move” problem. My mate has a small van lined up, and my Alhambra can take any normal sized cab no probs.

We plan to take a day off work, and do the warehouse shuttle shuffle from the warehouse to the various locations we’ll put stuff.

I assume this sounds “normal” to the hardened “raiders” J

Word to the wise. Post the details AFTER you've collected everything

Ditto, blank that first post, give a full write up once its happened and the spoils are in sitting safe in your hands.

Got to agree. The last raid that was previewed on here ended in complete catastrophe (from a "raid" perspective anyway).

sounds an interesting raid even if the cabs are in pretty poor shape, you never know what you'll find when you move them...

wise words above, I know your an eager beaver but posting even minor details of a potential raid can ruin it all

It's partly why I posted this.

I never thought I'd be posting a "raid" post.

I'm a muppet arcade fan, not a die-hard. Yet, suddenly I find myself arranging a warehouse raid.

If it falls flat on it's face, it becomes one of many "raids" that turned into a flight of fancy. Several years back I was all but certain to land an Asteroids from an op in the south of France. It was nothing but a waste of typing time in the end.

This is the first time I'm the one who's doing the digging. Feels odd. I much prefer when someone else just says to me "if this works out, be ready to turn up with a van".

If I was in this for the money, I'd say nothing of course.

I'm not though - this is a hobby I/we love.

I won't have egg on my face, as I'm not promising anything to anyone - other than an interesting write-up.

If someone smarter or with more money moves in, so be it. Honestly, the op is a decent guy - if he goes for money rather than honour I actually wouldn't blame him, and I've said as much. I'm moving in to help him out, and he knows if better deals can be found he is welcome to take them.

I admit I'd be slightly miffed it was HyperSpin hell mongers, but I don't think he'd go that way for a few quid more than what we are offering.

Certainly the ones we don’t want - of course we prefer someone takes them rather they get skipped.
My mate will turn a few round, I might even try my hand at doing a “mame” conversion on a couple that are too far gone.

It is getting close to Christmas, and I’m sure there are guys out there who take an original cab with pi mame or whatever with lcd over one of the over priced 4000 in one things I see for sale over here.

Hope you get the stuff mate ,try and hire a van with a lift ,saves a lot of hassle and back ache
That mame stuff u see advertised doesn’t really sell for the crazy prices people list for usually
Just lift what you think you can use for yourself,or to swap it sell to buy Some stuff you want
There could be some nice pcbs hiding
Make sure all your friends get silly things like cars out of their garages in preparation for your treasure coming
And as others have said ,don’t post anymore after that last debacle
Good luck

Thanks Equites and BP.

Logistics of the move and subsequent squirrelling are in progress. Indeed, people are being told they will be playing 3D Tetris. Earliest access to the site is next week.
Agree totally on tail-lift, thx.

If this, plus already "in planning" BEercade event work out - could be a fun time to showcase some rescued cabs :)

For the rest, nothing to see - move along....

Italo Disco

I went to the warehouse last night with my pinball mate. I got there 15 mins late - wife sprung a late surprise on my agenda. My pinball mate turned up 15 mins early - so I missed 30 mins of chatter between “the man” and my mate.

Turns out they have common friends, not really a surprise given the small scene here in Belgium - possibly more a surprise they’d never met!

A “nice” surprise is that a bunch of cabs that had been reserved have now freed up. Our storage space problem just got worse....My pinball mate is going to rent a garage from a friend of a friend…and the wife doesn’t know yet, but her (departed) mother’s garage is going to be converted to screen storage…

One of the Zaccariab I had my eye on is still reserved...but I wasn’t even aware of the 2nd. One of the panels has a chunk out the top of the left side panel, but it’s one of those lovely ZZZ cabs with space art - too nice to abandon. A couple of cabs that looked suspiciously like badly converted Atari…are Atari! US ones at that, either Breakout or Super Breakout. The OP hadn’t spotted that…99% of the time I feel like a complete amateur in this hobby, but for once…. :)

We were hoping to go over tomorrow to start with the clear-out, but even calling in favours from a personal friend who runs a Europecar Agency, there are no vans anywhere. End of month apparently is “peak period” moving time here. Will see for next weekend.

Another annoying factor I just noticed today is my C,D and E driving license categories expired a long time ago. Here in Belgium you have to get a medical and do a renewal process every 5 years. I had no clue. So, I’m bleedin stuck with category B license…nooooo! I’m no “big truckin’” die-hard, but I have shifted busses and x-tonners many a time, much to the surprise to everyone who knows me as the typical IT office geek I appear to be nowadays…

So, looking at about 16-18 cabs in various states - from not working and mostly complete, to just a shell. Then there’s a whole bunch of CRTs (some work, most not), some CPO, a couple of banana boxes of cards, various odds n sods (hopefully a trolley or two!). Even the shelving is up for grabs.

We’ll take the lot.

Oh, and the OP is known on here, he’s been to Revival more than once

Even funnier - we’ve been working in the same office…a few feet from each other… for the past few months. I walked past him this afternoon….sorry (again) mate, wasn’t my best day today…..arcade lifestyle is indeed a very small (and strange) world….

Flinnster - as I've said all along, this is a rescue mission.

Fate has conspired such that it's turning into a complete comedy - which makes a change to the complete farce that most of my professional life revolves around!

"Photos or it never happened". Yep - have a bunch of photos.

Nope, not going to upload them here until they're tucked away in our storage. Not that I don't trust the seller - just "sh.. happens".

Next update, next weekend.

...man, I can't believe I've been working a few feet from another arcade lifestyler for x months...we've chatted on t'interweb over the years...but we had *no clue* we were working literally feet from each other.

D'oh!

Maybe we should have tiny SI badges or something....

Yeah, it feels a bit daft - but until warehouse is emptied and cabs are in our hands, it's not a "raid".

Indeed, "exactly" is a very nice fella. I am narked as hell we worked for months beside each other - but didn't know, He'll be finished in a couple of weeks where I work (he knows this, so no surprise), but he's one of the lads in the scene here. I'm in a funny situation - I'm a Brit, but "over here". I've never really been accepted into the "scene" here. I've tried with the DLF lot - nothing against them at all.

Then again, a few of the core members of the scene here have quit 100%.

It's the biggest reason I've tried to kick off BEercade. The scene had "history". I don't - consider me a happy Labrador puppy..
