Andy,
Dry joints are caused during manufacture where the solder has not flowed
properly ( You may not see the ill effects until a lot later ). What I mean
by flow is that the solder has not adheared to one of the surfaces
properly, either the solder pad or component leg. This can be caused by
several things including dirt or corrosion on the surfaces or not enough
heat applied to one of the surfaces. Flux is used to help the solder flow
and some types can clean very small amounts of dirt but it is always best
to clean and tin the surfaces properly before soldering. Even grease from
your fingertips can cause solder to flow badly so it is also a good idea
not to touch the surfaces that you are about to solder.
Most solder tarnishes with age and will look grey but this does not mean
that the joint is dry. Try looking for tiny cracks that run around either
the component leg or solder pad. If you suspect any joints, Clean them of
all solder, Use plenty of extra flux and re - solder them making sure to
apply even amounts of heat to both surfaces. Practice is the key here so
dig out those WC90 and bootleg SF boards with corrupt graphics and get to
work pulling components and putting them back.

I know this isn't a proper arcade problem, but I know most of you
collect old consoles too.
Anyway Its just suddenly stopped working. I suspect dry solder joints
because I had a look inside and they where a dull silver colour i.e.
not shiny.
The point of this is how are dry joints caused, prevented and repaired.
The same thing happened to my TV a couple of months ago and it cost 35
to get repaired, the thing is I'm a bit worried spending that much on
an Atari Lynx, plus I want to stop it happening to arcade boards (see!
there is an arcade related reason!). Also I don't trust myself with a
soldering iron near electronics.
Bare in mind when answering my electronics skill = 0
