Okay, quick five minute guide to building a control panel...

Building a new control panel shouldn't be a particularly nasty job if you've
got some basic woodworking skills. Your existing joysticks will probably
be okay, but you may want to replace them for look/feel - I'd hang onto
them though, you may get the urge to play Ikari one day!

From what you've said, it seems as though your control panel can be
fairly easily removed from the cabinet? If so, whack it out and cut a piece
of MDF to match - this should be relatively straightforward with a standard
Jigsaw, but you could get most hardware stores to do it if you give them
the measurements.

All you need to do then is to figure out your joystick and button placement
and get hold of enough standard buttons for your layout. There are plenty
of people who sell buttons and joysticks, but as I happen to have the
catalog in front of me I'll give you the details of SUZO (who are generally
pretty good) on 0181 847 4242 (or at least, that's the last number I had
for them)

Button with Horizontal Microswitch (22-2086-XX) - available in lot's of
colours, and complete with switch and retaining nut. Ideal for your
purposes I'd guess.

They also sell joysticks, call 'em and I'm sure they'll sort you out. I
think
they have a minimum order value, so watch out for that.

Drill holes in your MDF and fix the buttons and 'sticks using whatever
means you can. You'll then need plenty of bits of wire to connect to your
JAMMA loom (you should be able to use your existing panel connections)
and a few more to connect to the "+" bit of the SFII board. (You'll have to
wing this, I don't really know the board, but look on wiretap for the
pinouts
and it should all become clear!).

You should then be able to pop your new control panel into your cabinet.

I've just realised that you might, depending on your existing button layout,
be able to replace your "crap rectangle buttons" with normal push buttons
and keep your existing control panel - just add a couple more holes for the
extra buttons. Standard fruit machine buttons (if that's what they are) will
probably have the same size hole.

Hope that helps, if not shout and I'm sure someone will be willing to come
to your aid...

Cheers
Chris
