[ukvac] [Tech] PCB Questions

A couple of things I thought I'd find out how everyone else
does it:

1) How do you all store your PCBs? A lot of mine are in big
Anti Static bags, but some are bubble wrapped, and I am always worried
about deteriation (not just static risks, but chip loosening etc)

2) I was about to start designing a "multi choice" box - basically a
bog wooden box that PCBs are inserted into (I think up to 10 in
my initial ideas) and permanently wired up, the box would have a
single JAMMA loom coming out of it to go to the machine, and a
swich of some form to select which PCB is live (I guess I'd throw
+5 +12 and where appropriate, -5v, and possibly GND, and all other
connections would be permanently wired, probably daisychained
from one JAMMA connector to the next. There's a few issues to
resolve in the idea, but before I start actually spending time on it
and actually designing it, does such a thing already exist?

Thanks

Gaz

You might get problems with the powered down boards dragging the
inputs of the live board down.
Hey, just buy another 9 cabinets (hee hee) ;-)

bubble wrap is bad unless its the pink antistatic type.

I store my boards in individual wooden boxes made from mdf with one side
left open for the edge connector to stick out. Best way to store them as
nothing bad can happen to them. I also drill a few holes in the top to let
heat out and also on the more expensive boards i add a fan inside the box
and wire it to the 12v on the edge connector

Could always supply power constantly

And then use a wafer rotary switch to control the 4 video signals and the
start buttons and sound.

Then wire all the inputs up in parallel so that the joystick and controls
buttons are permanently switching to all the boards.

Bit of a hack.... But it does work. The stacker switches can go up to 12
way ( that is control 12 channels )
and can control about 8 boards.

Just make sure the PSU can handle the power required ( esp the +12V line
since it will be powering all the amps at once - even with no load they can
still draw 10mA - ~200mA quiescent )

You know Sega Model 2/3 Cages are ideal for certain Jamma games, they are
strong, well ventilated and have fan mountings, believe it not the cheapest
way to get one of these cages is to buy a Virtua Fighter 3, well probably!

I hear this quite a bit, but nearly ALL my board are stored in plain old
clear bubble wrap and I haven't had a problem caused by this yet.

Some of my more recent acquisitions have even been nicely wrapped in
bubble wrap (again clear) all taped up and a little cut out at the edge
connector to enable the board to be connected AND PLAYED without
unpacking it. Now I took this as going a little far, so immediately
unwrapped these, but again, of the ones I've tested I haven't seen a
disproportionate number of these not working.

If anything the latter ones I describe seem to work better than ones
just in boxes.

YMMV obviously :O)

SNIP!

After getting a nicely parceled pcb from Marco Krieger, I now store all my
pcbs like this,
I label each box, they take up more room, but are kept safe and sound., plus
it looks good
than a pile of pcbs chucked on a heap :) (ahem p-man)

Nice boxes Jon,

Where did you get them from, and how much did they cost.

I remember the boxes that Andy Jones had made up specially for this task.
Always meant to get around to doing it :)

Dude! nice set up.
What's with the retro 80s digital watch,
Is it to keep an eye on the time when you're
playing the video games???
