[ukvac] UKVAC mailing list changes
Stung into action by the cries (well, cry) of me not contributing to "the
scene", I, your UKVAC mailing list maintainer, have decreed that from now on
the Reply field to a UKVAC mailing list post will be set to the original
posters address (well, technically I've just checked egroups and found out I
could set it to do this in the options now.. doh!). To reply to the mailing
list you'll now have to change the To field in your reply email to
ukvac@egroups.com (but I guess you'll have known that). This should
hopefully sort out all those rather embarrassing replies that go to the list
by mistake (Jim.. you're the latest culprit ;)). I'll stick a poll up in a
couple of weeks or so to see if anyone thinks it works better this way (or
indeed if anyone cares)

I don't have to wait for a poll. I hate it already. 8 out of 10 messages I
send are to the group and I think it's the same for others.

Why not poll first and see what people think b4 making any changes?

Nooooo!!! Put it back please. This just means that messages meant for
the group just get sent to a private individual half the time (and it's
worse if you don't notice).

Anyway, replying to the list with "I'll offer a tenner for that" is all
part of the Ukvac fun!

I have put it back to the way it was for the meantime (so you'll have to
watch those "I'll offer a tenner for that" replies again ;)) and have
instead set up a poll. Please vote for the way you'd like the list to work.

Can the web side of egroups NOT truncate and obscure the email
addresses? I presume the digest/mailling emails must do this too..

I manage another egroups list and I don't think it's possible to fix
that. It's presumably an anti-spam measure for open archive groups. I
could be wrong though.

This is really essential to avoid us getting overwhelmed by spam. People
*do* trawl collectors' web sites for email addresses, hence eGroups, eBay
and many others obscuring them, and only providing email addresses to
registered members of groups...

Aww! That'll take all the fun out of those mortally embarrassing
misdirected replies that pop up on our screens like auto-gossip. :)
