Bombjack - Charity Competition

Hi all,

So as per my other post, want to do another charity competition.

This month it’s Bombjack.

Rules are, whoever gets the highest score in the month, I will donate £50 to the charity of their choice.

No continues. 3 Jacks. Initials must be entered as UKV

Dipswitches should be:

SW1

5 and 6 off

SW2

All off.

Post your scores up here and I’ll close the submissions on 23rd August!

I’ll post up some stuff about how to score well on Bombjack.

It’s all about ensuring you get the bombs with the fuses lit and avoiding them if they’re not.

That makes a token appear and then you need to make sure you get that token when it’s on the correct colour

Damn, I need to get to Arcade Club. I've always got my best scores on that Bomb Jack and never been able to replicate at home.
Maybe the beer is better in Bury.

Show DIP settings?! Didn’t realise it was a TG submission… Anyway here is the setting on my Mister. Note that the bird speed is labelled wrong in the menu. It is on the first setting which is ‘moderate’ in the DIPs but labelled ‘easy’ on MiSTer. There are 4 settings on the MiSTer menu which correspond to the 4 settings in the DIPs

I didn’t know about the pill having different points depending on colour. I wondered why my scores would vary on the early levels, that explains why.

Also you can jump on the spot for points, worth up to 100 per jump if you have 5x going. It’s useful to get over each 5000 point level for more bonus coins. It’s also good practice to end each level just a few hundred under the next 5000 barrier so you can get 2x going straight away in the next level. You can get 40000 on each of the lower levels with some forward thinking.

It’s hard to just ‘exist’ indefinitely without picking up bombs. Whilst it is useful to jump to generate a multiplier or give yourself a score close to the next one for the start of the next level, it’s a long way to a high score just jumping!

Jump off the walls repeatedly is easier than jumping on the spot, or is that what you mean?

I love Bombjack, my all time best is 760k, so I have my work cut out here.

Tried a few very rusty games last night and 450k was the best I could muster.

On these dips is it right to get the UFOs on Lv5 instead of bombs?

Looking forward to regaining my BJ mojo, so to speak...

Yeah - on my MAME set-up you get flying saucers on your case on Level 5 (with those settings).

Just a suggestion (feel free to ignore - it's not my gig after all!).... but so not to put off new players, why not split the winnings - say £25 to the charity nominated by the guys/gals that haven't played it before (or have just played a few games) and £25 to those that have quite a few hours under their belt.

Obviously some honesty required when submitting a score but this is for charity after all.

And it would encourage bomb jack noobs to give this awesome game a go.

I've been playing for years, but my best is still only around 700k, I think. I used to be able to get to much higher levels BITD, so It would be great to be able to blame MAME, and not old age. No idea what the cab DIPs were on back then though, of course.
