How long do you play for? (Post GTAV realisation...)

Having just finished and really enjoyed GTAV for the second time in 10 years, I realised outside of Monkey Island it's one of the very few games I've finished twice. Easy to drop in for and hour then lose yourself in the detail for another. I question whether they'll be another "perfect example" of the true transition of blockbuster home gaming, at least in my lifetime - look forward to being proven wrong though! (Recommendations welcome)

Back on topic... having racked up about 20-24 hour on it I laughed knowing people I know have done 400+ on other games in a quarter of the time.... and I don't know how 🤷‍♂️

I don't have kids so I can only assume a lot of my time disappears on work and a whole lot of nothing - it's a bit of a shocking realisation though, I don't even sleep that much which makes me wonder what the hell I am actually doing with my time 🤔

Long gone are the glory days of no kids and sinking hundreds of hours into Destiny...

These days, my gaming is done in 'short controlled bursts' if you will - so arcade games are great. Although Resident Evil 4 is one of my favourite games, so I am going through the remake for the second time - so i've probably put 40 + hours into that since it was released.

Kind of worried me if kids do end up coming along late in the day, whether I'll even find the time for a 40 hour game a year - I'm probably not doing much more than that at the moment though 👀

Starting to think I may need the structure in my life 🤣

(...knows everybody with kids has probably just chocked and shouted KIDS!?! STRUCTURE!?!?)

You just have to pick your moments. My son likes retro games so we often play Sonic or Zelda together.

Other than that it's post 10pm one everyone else has gone to bed, and I can sit downstairs with headphones on an immerse myself in the world of survival horror. I put plenty of tine into Elden Ring as well actually, but i'm sacrificing sleep :(

I'm a chronic insomniac at times, I've often wondered whether it's because I do go bed to early though aside from stress 😂

You've reminded me with the headphones actually I need to go back to Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, with decent set of headphones and that was incredible, only handled about 45 mins of it and haven't made the time available since.

If life is quiet, i can still marathon something if its worth it. Witcher 3 and Days Gone spring to mind.

I started a 2nd run through of RDR2 in March, with the challenge to do as much as possible before the inevitable TB mission in Chapter 2. Arthur is still TB free and has completed 52% of the game. I reckon this has taken 60 odd hours (bloody legendary fishing is a killer)

now the only thing left to do that isnt locked behind Blackwater is to speak to Thomas Downes...

To become better organised I made a Trello board with automation that would post to our group discord when I started and completed a game.

I stopped RE8 as being chased around by a mutant crying baby, in the pitch dark with headphones on was not my idea of fun. It's a bit out of date but did help for a while - I actually completed Super Metroid and Super Castlevania 4 :D

See this is exactly what ime talking about 😂

RDR2 - pre-ordered it played an hour, work took over and I forgot about it 😳

Last Of Us 1 and 2 - Still not done 😬

I think I lack encouragement which this is giving!

Red Dead Redemption 2 was/is an epic game. I finished it originally and spent maybe 120hrs doing so. Then bought the game again for a different platform to play it through trying to get everything. I managed 50 or 60 hrs and then gave up.
I really hope they bring out another game in that franchise.

The original 'The Last of Us' is an outstanding story, I played through that on PS4 and really enjoyed it. Silent Hill 2 is a fantastic story (and with the PS5 remake coming out that could be a good one to hit at) I always liked Resident Evil 4 and completed the PS4 version.
For me, there are very few truly outstanding stories. I did recently play through the original COD: MW2 campaign again and enjoyed that,

I find it really hard to strike a balance, I want a game that isn't too long that it feels boring/drags/you loose interest in the character, isn't repetitive (for example some of the newer batman games are just rinse and repeat the same mechanics over and over again!), isn't too complicated, for me complicated combos or controls just get between me and the game.

That's my 'pennies worth' anyway.

Only games I've bothered with are The Last Of Us 1 and 2 and Days gone. Was part of a Pro Evolution Soccer league which took up 5 years of my life 😆

Nothing else springs to mind after Dreamcast which is why I've ended up with two Naomi cabs and on here.

Sold my PS5 to get my youngest an Xbox X which I use at the weekend to play Golf With Your Friends and Wheel Of Fortune with beer, great laugh 😂

I have SF6 but am sh1t at it, can't get my head around that paint thing move, always lose out to it. So end up playing Street Fighter 3rd Strike as it seems the only SF I'm ok at 😆

I like Shenmue, haven't played part 3.

@david656 yeah far too many seem like nothing but grind now which seems like time for nothing unless there's a sense of achievement out of it.
Exactly that... the constant grind in some games is unbearable. I've really struggled with the Xbox Series S to find anything worth even playing. even the PS4 was a bit of a struggle, I really enjoyed Outlast and Outlast: Whistleblower, but Outlast 2 was a complete drag, It just feels like the days of having an awesome game being released every month have just gone (for me at least). I'm retrospectively going back to the PS3 (a console in its day that I also struggled with after the success of the PS2) but I've been playing through Little Big Planet 2 (I completed 1 back in the day), Gran Turismo 5 has been a fun play through.

Maybe its a growing up thing, but after the PS2 gaming has died a bit for me.

newer revisions of games like Street Fighter (5 and 6) and Tekken (anything after 5) just haven’t grabbed me.

I stick to SF4 and Third Strike. I agree with the point about the grind though, I can’t even get started on the new Zelda knowing it’s 100 hrs or so.

I was genuinely angry at the redneck inbred fellas who killed my xxx. I actually heard one of them shout to the others to do it. I was in shock for a good while after. I went back, tooled up, and executed every motherducking last one of them.

I played as a good guy so it was very out of character but I couldn’t help it as I was raging so much.

That game did make me shed a tear when the first part of the game finished. What a moment.
I grew attached to so many characters, I was left quite hollow when I actually finished it. I just wandered around collecting every bird, card and trinket until there was literally nothing left to do.

Next PC upgrade I’m playing through the whole thing again.

10/10.
