Am I missing something or has this been done?

Just seen a hack of Streets Of Rage but using Street Fighter characters. Why has this not been done before!? Instead of the standard punch, kick & jump mechanics you could bust out a hurricane kick, dragon punch or fireball.

Is it the fact that up and down are jump in a 2D fighter and in the 3D plane of beat em up they just move the character? THERE MUST BE A WAY!

Imagine the possibilities of playing Final Fight with Blanka or Mutation Nation with Geese Howard!

I suppose Alien vs Predator was close to this style, but with dragon punches being performed with a quick Down/Up on the joytick.

There is an arcade scrolling beat em up called Shadow Force that uses a 6 button layout:

Again, not exactly what you envisioned, but along similar lines.

Guardian Heroes on the Saturn had a lane switching mechanic to move into and out of the screen. Not as free as a traditional 2D side scrolling brawler but it means ‘up’ is jump and not walk upwards.

The other problem would be facing left and right. Fighting games don’t have that problem so rolling the joystick 180 degrees doesn’t make you face the wrong way.

Getting ‘actual’ fighting game mechanics into a scrolling brawler is like trying to bang a square peg in a round hole. Just having the characters appear with simplified button inputs like ‘x for fireball’ is probably as close as it can get.

I forgot about Guardian Heroes. That's a good game.
You could get away with having joystick motions in the direction you're facing, like the hadouken in Megaman X, and that would be about it.
Other motions, like you said, wouldn't be possible due to facing directions.

Really good points on the 180 issue but the solutions are simple enough as you've mentioned.

Seems like a lot of untapped potential to me. A streetfighter themed beat em up is the obvious choice. Something akin to the new Shredders Revenge game would be epic.

Tekken did this in number 2 or 3

You played the game with the characters but on a side scrolling beat-em-up style game, it was better than the main game

What about two sticks? One for moving about, the other for attacks using a motion with no button - maybe a foot pedal/button - unpressed for punch, pressed for kick!?

Or...

Standard stick and six buttons but... there's a microphone and you have to shout the name of the special move into it then the necessary button press!!! Four player mayhem!!! 😆

Don't forget a steering wheel to turn your character around and a heart monitor that selects different outfits

I'd play it!
