Petrol stations should bear the brunt of dealing with this.
It's not your fault this happened and you are simply a customer.
What they should do is implement some system where you can't leave without paying,a barrier system or something like that.

I think in the US they make you pay before filling up, how that works I dont know as you would have to guess how much you could put in, and some states dont even let you pump your own fuel.

The other option is make all the pumps card payment only then the fuel cant be stolen as the card is authorised before fuelling, and then for anyone who refuses to use a card can go in and prepay at the counter.

Yeh seems the correct way , we do it backwards. Even 'Pay a the pump' it waits till after you have fueled up before taking the money. It should ask how much you want and fill to that , Only issue I suppose is you may not have enough room for the amount you have asked for. Other option is for them to take a card and then as soon as you replace the pump it takes the money.

Dave.

P.S Have you rung DVLA and Police ?

Pay at the pump does a pre-auth for a set amount to check card is OK and you have funds available, it'll then allow you to fill up with up to that amount of fuel. Think our local Saino's it's now £99.

So if you're having issues - drive up to a "pay at the pump" and use that.

Yes, in the US you prepay for fuel before filling up.
You go inside and pay the cashier the amount you want to fill up. If paying by cash and you don’t use up the full amount you have prepaid, you go back inside and get the change from the cashier. If paying by card, any unused amount is automatically credited back to your card, so you can simply drive away without revisiting the cashier.

I’m really surprised they don’t do the same thing here. It would stop fuel theft.

It’s not just the fuel issue,

It’s all that the thieves are using the plate clone for which causes real life issues for the innocent persons who unknowingly are about to have their lives disrupted.

My partner is thr registerd owner of said vehical and we have moved recently.
So on reporting to the police I may actually be in for a shock if the cloners have committed more crimes than I am aware of ?
you don’t want to have an accident with these guys as they aren’t insured.

Maybe they have used the cloned car in robbery’s ?

Just two scenarios because of lack of
Protection for ourselves by the system.
number plates -arcane. It needs updating To protect the purchaser of the vehical from the associated number of crimes that are caused by
Number plate copying.

In fact it’s so loose a system chassis ident codes and vosa codes in the window glass have also been around for years for the actual identification of the vehical ?
Number plates - just to easy to copy.
Invite criminals to have an easy ride and they will oblige.

They could be cloned just as easily. Pretty much anything you can think up can be copied. They just need to come up with something that's as difficult to copy as possible, like modern bank notes.
🤣 they aren’t real.
But in the real world maybe a quartz crystal for a unique mhz freaquancy could work ?

I had a credit card cloned, and am pretty sure it was an inside job of the food delivery company. As I did not even use that company and simple checks would establish why is this guy ordering a banquet on the hour. They must have been skimming the money, not possibly eating all the food. Although the bank did not spot multiple transactions to a company I had never used, they paid it all back. I reported the fraud to the Internet bank that money also got transferred to, they did not give a shit!
