Started working on machine number 2 today and was happily getting on nicely till it started flipping raining :censored: Thought its either Window or Driving Cab so glad I hadn't got all the window stuff outside doing that

Debated for a good while if I should fit LCD but with so many later games that really need widescreen and higher resolutions it made sense, anything 90s onwards looks great on them really, there aren't huge amount of brilliant 80's Drivers and all the good ones I have original machines or can play them in cabs with CRT so not really an issue

I've already done the other cab but now I have that to follow it makes this one easier as all the planning, guessing, measuring was done first time with some mistakes as I wasn't even sure how to fix it in, worked out okay though, so with a pile of Aluminium from the knackered Gazebo I scrapped it's being getting used for a few things

P1090309.JPG

Chop the hole off the end as close as, then start with good bit, measured at 64cm and cut both upright supports

P1090310.JPG

Took a fair bit of thought how I was going to fix these LCD's in place and get it to align with height and width of bezel so it's centred and what metal would I use for the fixing plate, I've still got some biggish bits of scrap metal from various things though I'd sooner save some of it for other things planned, then I had a thought, somewhere I still have a TV Wall Fixing Kit that never got used, after digging it out I measured things up and bingo cut in half it would be perfect, 1 half for each machine so this was 2nd half which I just needed to cut the corners out like the other

P1090307.JPG

Then this time knowing how it's going, clamp the uprights in place and drill the holes

P1090313.JPG

This way I know it's in right place, around centred but the plate hole will be slotted so that can be adjusted up/down to align with bezel. so time for the brilliant Rivet tool
This is real handy and used on many things now, got Rivet Nuts to go in the holes

P1090314.JPG

P1090316.JPG

Just push in the hole, and clamp it into place

P1090317.JPG

Selection of bolts from stripped cars so no added costs, bolted the plate to the uprights so I can clamp that in the cab and drill the holes

Bolted in place after hunting around for some more long enough bolts and next I need spacers to bring it more level for the monitor bezel as I did on the other

P1090324.JPG

Just got enough of this 6mm plastic that had been cut from Atari Sprint 2 monitor bezel and fitted on Star wars cockpit

P1090321.JPG

Fitted in front of aluminium at top and behind alloy at bottom

P1090327.JPG

and that was it, next step was slotting the plate and cutting the monitor brackets to slot on to the plate but by then raining heavy so had to come in, hopefully weather okay tomorrow

Was hoping to get up early this morning to get loads more done, got raging toothache and didn't get much sleep, not that I've got up any earlier most days but least I had excuse today , nice to see some blue sky too, didn't last long but no rain YAY :)

So got cracking. My original plan was to just fix the monitor too that plate with some slotted holes, trouble is you'd need two people to fit it which is not ideal, so then thought well why don't I use it the same way the TV wall brackets designed. These were the brackets which you fix to the TV and it then just hooks on to the wall plate and 2 sliding locks.

P1090328.JPG

These are way too big so it was time to make them, the box section aluminum strikes again :giggle: could get away with 2 but I went with 3 as they are quite heavy LCD

As I already had the 3 I'd made for 1st cab It's just copy again though I picked the 2nd attempt one from the middle which I changed after that cutting out less metal at bottom half, oh well it's still fine

P1090330.JPG

Get it cut down on the Evolution Table Saw, It's done the job for me and I've used it for many things, I would have bought better if I had space to leave setup. its not too heavy to move about, I don't buy many things new but this I did

P1090333.JPG

Cut up in the chop saw which came from the tip :) I did get my dad a Table Saw from there too which he still uses and a nice Band Saw

P1090331.JPG

Nice and quick doing jobs if you have the tools

Time for Jigsaw and then Boring Filing them down

P1090335.JPG

P1090336.JPG

Have a break from those and get the plate slotted for up/down adjustment. Drilled hole each end and used angle grinder to cut through both sides then could knock it out with screw driver, tidy up and done

If you like original outrun I think the cannonball emulator has a widescreen patch in it, it also fixes the drawing limitations of the original hardware so you don't get missing parts of the overhead structures on some levels. I don't think it looks too bad with fake scan lines enabled on an LCD either.

Back to the brackets, need to do the holes to fix to Monitor, thought I'd clamp them with one already done

P1090343.JPG

2 of them I fitted these metal brackets so I could have sliding lock to hold it in position, couldn't find the one tap I needed, 4mm I think so couldn't get the threads done for bolt, though you don't really need it as once bezel is in place it stops it moving at all so not sure if I'll bother but I'd already cut out the T Brackets for them when I did the others which was handy as I wouldn't have time today with out

P1090347.JPG

Got these filed down and bent, riveted in place and then it's dark. with these fitted it also stops the monitor being pushed up once bezel against the front of LCD

I have Original Sitdowns and Turbo so yeah I like Outrun :) I will put all driving games on it anyway just so you can have a go on ones I don't have, I haven't tried Cannonball to be honest. I get mixed up but in early days of emulators I'm sure the System16 version, someone did a patch to add FFB on PC steering wheels, was cool at the time but it had some of the music missing, It had been so many years since I'd had the 2 goes on Outrun and didn't remember the wheel moved side ways, worked good with FFB still

I took me quite a while to decide about the Monitors, with Teknoparrot that made up my mind and it had to be done. Next issue was what screens though, didn't want TV's, I know many have had 16:9 Screens fitted but then you need to replace the speakers as no gaps at side. You'd have to fix speakers up top, make a new bezel of some sort and I want to keep it as original look as I can, I did think about getting cabs with LCD already but I've put a lot of work into these ones so far and didn't want to start again.

When I was setting up Teknoparrot for my nephew I was using the HP Monitor that came with the base unit I gave him, the monitor I'm using now is 23" and HP one is 24" but looks massive comparing them, then I found out it's because it's 16:10 which got me thinking, I started looking at 16:10 LCD and there are quite a few, was 2 on local that were about £850 new and he was asking £75 each, forget the make but they had metal cases, looked nice but only 1 DVI input, some Dell ones same but I thought NEC I'll go for, has DVI and HDMI, make sure I get LED Lit keep running costs down.

few good things with the 16:10 screens the bezel with fit top and bottom which trimmed down, it leaves a small gap each side of the monitor and size of screen isn't far off the CRT, think it was half inch smaller if game is 4:3 so mind made up. just a load more work fitting these in but I wanted to do half decent job

After a lot of work altering the original speakers I wanted to keep them in the cabs, replaced the 2 original rotted foam speakers with single bigger TV ones which sound okay, that 6mm sprint 2 plastic was used in these also to fill in gapes top/bottom

Boomslangnz is the one who has FFB working with Mame, I might also have a bezel for sale (from Outrun 2), gone LCD myself, so already worked out most things.

So I can refit the original Speakers I had to make some new speaker brackets, they have to be set further back so just behind LCD, that has inch gap each side
so you still get the sound through. Metal I cut sides out of old washing machine I scrapped for parts to fix mine, just need some more metal to do the other pair now

P1410786.JPG

Sandblasted and painted black

P1090357.JPG

P1090359.JPG

Added some metal to front of speaker to help channel the sound around LCD which works well

Great job ......... But why is it not made of wood ! ARGHHHH ! lol. I LCD'ed mine too.

Dave.

Wood  Why Wood? Most of the cab is Metal. I quite like doing metal work, don't wanna do it everyday like but when I need to make something I enjoy seeing things come together

Got more plans for these cabs yet to maximise the games I can play in them with the LCD's
