Well, not had much luck with MVS this week but a ray of sunshine - super chuffed to be able to resurrect my Metal Slug 3 with garbled graphics.

Turned out to be a corroded trace etc - watched many a YouTuber do these sort of repairs but with eyes that certainly aren't getting any younger and a Heath Robinson magnifying set up it's not so easy - these traces are tiny and it was knackered right through the board - it's not the prettiest repair but bloody chuffed it worked and all is good with MS3. :love:

Did the re-cap yesterday and after all the worries it was surprisingly easy - almost fun! I found that using a pair of brand new PCB snips to lose all the solder side leg and solder really flush to the underside helped a lot. That left very little for the braid to have to soak up. With a properly hot iron they came off easy then by pulling down on the cap and wiggling whilst alternately heating each solder point from the other side and they came out very quickly. No dramas or damage in the end.

I did not replace the HA13001 or Z80 yet but I'll try the 4 slot today.

Change the amp
Just completed - what a ba$tard job that was trying to desolder and clear all the vias. But installed now, double checked all continuity but absolutely nothing - no sound.

The battery area etc is all perfect - as posted I think I rigged up an external battery years ago and the board has been working fine for 15 years odd prior to this.

So it's now fully recapped, brand new HA13001 and all traces appear clean and fine.

I have a new Z80A to try - just waiting on a socket for it.

If that doesn't work then ???? :unsure::cry:;)

Since you recapped have you had any sound ?? Or was it intermittent then nothing now after recapp ? I dont think i ever had an amp fail on these they are prety good. You get buzzing humming if you rub your finger over the amp pins when on ??

I had right channel only after recap for 10 mins before that died but IIRC that was the same before recap anyway.

Will check later on humming and report back. 🙂

Ah kk was wondering if the recap had caused the no sound but clearly not. Seen it a million times when broke a track without noticing when recapping / repairing a board. Also check if anything getting hot , amp , ram ect.

Dave.

Cheers guys, really appreciate the ongoing help with this. I’ll get back with update ASAP.

Battery was just a precaution thing, not because of any damage.

Cheers Dave. Waiting on the Z80 socket but as I say if that doesn’t fix it and after I’ve double checked all the traces again not sure I can do more TBH.

After I put the HA13001 I checked all the solder points and continuity etc. It was all good but did seem odd that on each side of the HA the two outer pins on each side had continuity with each other. No solder bridges.
