The government will be clawing back every penny they can for a while

You think?

I'm quite sure that they'll hammer the small guy for every last penny. But that's just to make sure you know your place.

Doubt they'll be going after Amazon, Starbucks, Google, Rees Mogg etc. for the collective £Billions in tax they should have been paying.

Thank goodness we've signed up to the EU's new Anti Tax Avoidance Directive. Oh no, wait....

i’ve never quite understood why people think everyone should be paying more tax, the whole tax system is totally immoral. i go to work and do a job and the government is entitled to 40% of what i earn, every time i buy done thing they take 20% of the purchase price, they tax the car, tv, insurance, every damn thing you do or buy has multiple layers of tax on it - they tax the wages of the people who create the product, who transport the product, including road and fuel tax, they tax the buildings used to store and sell the product, every damn thing.

and in return we are told there is not enough money to run a top-heavy health service or education or repair roads, all the while giving out billions in foreign aid and spending £500,000 a time blowing up toyota land cruisers in syria.

and if you don’t pay tax they throw you in prison.

anyone who willingly pays tax and thinks it’s a good idea to tax more is an idiot

Tax is the price you pay for living in a progressive society. It pays for our schools, or healthcare our pensions and more besides. You should pay your tax with pride knowing it will help to support your community. I would happily pay more tax if I knew my elderly relatives could get new knees whenever they needed them, that no one was homeless and everyone had enough to eat.

Of course, there comes a point when tax eats into the average punter's disposable income. But that's not the case for the hedge fund managers of this world. Some of them could be taxed at 90% and still have more money than they could spend...

I would happily pay more tax if it wasn't being spent directly on a 15 million quid contractor bonus for some friend of Boris' to have the task of sourcing some bog-standard face masks from China that end up being unsafe.

Good point. Luckily there's are some easy medium term solutions to that problem...

You could throw all the money in the world at problems like those and they would still exist - many people are often 'poor' because they don't prioritise the little money they have, they always seem to find enough for fags, drugs and alcohol and yet complain they have to use a food bank. People end up homeless because they cant live in a civilised manner in normal accommodation and so get thrown out of a series of homes because they either don't pay the rent - preferring to spend it on drugs etc - or cause so many problems for their neighbours that they get evicted.

As for new knees for the relatives, perhaps there would be a better health-service if the money was spent where it is actually needed instead of on multiple layers of management and buying practices that mean a pack of paracetamol costs them a tenner...

Well, stupid or not, I don't mind contributing 20% of the cost of a cheap pack of Chinese-made PCBs towards the £1,000,000,000 UK annual budget, but it looks like the only way to do things 'properly' is to go through various vendors and see if anyone actually includes the charges.

So what you're trying to tell me is that my addiction to buying CAVE PCB's is why I can only afford to eat ASDA smartprice noodles?

I've had a few parts come in from China since Jan 1st and so far they are not being clobbered.

I thought we have a waiver agreement until July 2021 on the LVCR (it certainly is going the other way).

If you bought an item that was under the old £15 threshold and it was paid for and posted before 31st December 2020, then there is no Import VAT if the item is delivered after 1st January.

I believe the July 2021 date you are referring to is when the EU also start to introduce this same VAT collection at the point of sale (happy to be corrected if I’ve got it wrong).

Don’t forget “Gift” parcels under £39 are still exempt from the tax

I’ve temporarily stopped purchases via Chinese sellers on eBay at the moment as the Import VAT situation is not clear. eBay do not seem to be collecting the VAT from any Chinese sellers that I can see and I don’t want a potential ridiculous charge from Royal Mail for a package that’s worth a few quid.

I’ve moved back to buying on AliExpress as they collect the VAT at checkout, there’s no handling fees and prices seem to be cheaper than eBay anyway, even with the VAT added.

Yep from July it should be EU wide EU July 2021 ending €22 import VAT exemption; new Import OSS return - Avalara

From the arcade parts and repair website (https://www.arcadepartsandrepair.com):

“The Taxation (Post-transition Period) Act. The Act makes changes necessary to implement the new VAT rules on sales of goods moving into and out of the UK & Ireland starting January 1st 2021, so we have stopped shipping to those countries until we can figure out the amount of work required to collect VATs. This change made it necessary for all companies around the world shipping into the UK and Northern Ireland to collect VATs on ALL order values.“

If they were to have a minimum order of £135 for the UK then nothing would change for them.
