Is Mame going forward or backward with regard to working Roms?

Why do some games that worked in 151 not work in 200? I know it's probably just me or my setup, but for example, Dead or Alive.... the Jap version, worked in 151. Can't get any version to work in 200. As far as I can tell I've got all the bios files it needs. It states I'm missing some obscure file that google doesn't even recognise. Driving me MAD!!!

Zed... hopefully later after work I'll put on a screenshot of what it says is missing. There's a tiny file (only 8 bits or something like that) and a larger one.

What version do you call the 'normal' one?

I'm trying to put on only the games I want, and get each one going one at a time, rather than putting on 30,000 and trying to whittle them down.

This suggests I need only the rom and the bios.... (jap version)

And they're both there.

Well that file is in the zip file I have, so I guess your source for roms isn't all that good.

It's only 13 meg so if you want to PM me your email I can send it to you.

Oh, just to note email notifications from me from here are often delayed for several days fore some reason, so I may not know straight away.

That would be great! PM'd. Thanks.

Am I allowed to mention my rom source on here?

MAME exists to preserve, so when additional parts of a game are dumped, then they are added to the ROMs (whether MAME uses them or not, in its emulation). MAME’s insistence on it being there stops folk stripping them out the .zip files.
It’s obviously a pain for people who just want to play emulated games, but it’s 100% a step forward as:

1. You might find the emulation is more accurate. 3D stuff often has a lot of minor inaccuracies (as the 3D is approximated with guesses).

2. If you need a ROM/PAL for a dead game, then you’ll more likely find it in a MAME
ROMset.

DOA_Good_Rom.jpg

And running at 100% frame rate....always nice to see!

Thanks 'big-time' mate. Lesson learned re internet rom sources. I was starting to get a bit disillusioned.

I've got the full set my son downloaded . Think they're 198. I'll check them before panicking next time a d/l rom gives me grief.

One happy bunny me

Maybe try Romvault - its a bit more 'user friendly' http://www.romvault.com/

Look at the video at the top of the page....

Simple.
Step 1 - put the DAT file in the DAT folder (from http://www.emulab.it/rommanager/datfiles.php
Step 2 - put your roms in the TOSORT folder
Scan, find fixes, then fix roms and away you go....

Doddle

Nothing's a doddle for 'Beta-Max-Man'!

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out with the bad DOA and see what it tells me.

Thanks JT. Very kind.

My son was going to look at romvault for me but it's a case of 'when he gets a mo'. Think I'll have to proceed without him. I'll let you know how it goes.

I've just spend all day sorting out my MAME roms as 201 was released a couple of days ago and mine were still at 198.

Scary thing is V201 takes 2.9Tb of disk space, I remember when they would all fit on a CDR.

It's a lot smaller if you don't bother with CHDs, the majority aren't worth it.

MAME is 614Gb for ROMS, CHDS, Extras & Multimedia files - the rest is for MESS (which was merged in a while ago).

MAME ROMS alone are 64Gb.
