20 Pin CPLD 'upright' Module ideas ?

I'm looking at doing a 'right angle' 20 pin cpld module...

This has pro's and cons.... obviously as it will stick up a bit but will be built to be robust.... and it will fit places where others won't fit... ;-)

Apart from doing the obvious power pin options in the corners (and a mode to fit a slapstic in)... are any other 20 pin chip power configurations that might be useful to have ??

Its nowhere near finished yet.... but I think it may have some useful applications and will be cheap and easy to build. Will bring out spare pins to pads and config links , maybe a couple of leds, etc...

Any ideas chaps ??? Are there 18 way chips that need this too, so I might add extra power links ?

An alternative could be to use surface mount pin headers on the reverse side so you don't need any through holes then the CPLD can sit in the middle right over the top, so it overhangs only a little bit?

It'd certainly look unusual to have a right-angle riser, and would also be fragile and prone to getting broken off like so many tall SIL packages do when they're not stored properly.

Had a look... The Pin headers that are surface mount I can only find on a prototyping parts site but they take up a bit of real-estate on the pcb... about 3mm either side of centres... I've drawn up a pcb anyway but they might be a squeeze...

An alternative would be to fit something like this.... as there is plenty of meat so solder to.

Good call... BUT... I'm not a fan of squeezing those 'bigger' pins into IC sockets... also they won't fit into turned pin ones.

I much prefer turned pins (and appreciate they are a little more fragile) but that's just my personal preference.

I always use an intermediate IC socket between the header pins and the actual socket to protect the target socket, but in your application direct connect would preferable as you say :)
