Hi guys,

After some advice please, which is hugely unlike me, I know.....

So with my virgin purchase under my belt and looking forward to the future, I thought I would ask for some general advice.

First cab was a Sega Scud sit down, which I love, I mean, really love, but whilst it fulfils sooooo much, it also leaves a couple of points unaddressed. Mainly, the kids can't really play it, other than sitting on dad's knee whilst he does the pedals and they steer; and whilst I love racers and intend to buy another (OR2 !!

), eventually, I yearn to rekindle the retro gaming experience and also introduce my kids to it, they are aged 7 and 3.

So, I think that the best machine for my/their needs would be a 2 player cocktail table, that way everyone can sit at it and reach the controls. Also, in the interest of keeping them interested, I think a 60 in 1, would be best.

Now at the risk of losing all of you in one line, would a shiny new repro be a better bet

, not that I would use FeeBay, but there are some examples on there for about £600, which give little detail, but I would imagine are made from 1000% MDF, LCD screen, etc.

I have absolutely no preference to old/new on this one, the main thing is to introduce the kids to the games dad used to play and as it will get played and played and played and played, reliability is probably gonna be key, along with the multitude of games available on it.

So, advice please on what is out there/available, prices, etc, etc, all the usual knowledge that you guys have at the tips of your fingers, to save me weeks of scouring previous threads!

The big wedding date is only 3 weeks away !!!

, so this is a future purchase and just doing some homework at this point.

As always, many, many thanks in advance.

Neil.

Hi Neil

A nice little cocktail with a multigame PCB is certainly a great way to keep kids of all ages entertained.

As for buying new, well, like you said, they're pricey, and they'll almost certainly have an LCD screen. Not my cup of tea, but each to their own. LCDs may not be considered 'authentic', but so what?! The kids aren't going to know, and if you can pick up a nice working, used cocktail with a 60-in-1 for £150-£200 instead of buying a new one for £600, that's one heck of a saving you could put towards something else.

An alternative to a cocktail would be a small upright JAMMA cabinet.

I know you've mentioned that your youngest is just 3, but my boys when they were a bit smaller used to stand on one of those plastic folding 'step' thingies to reach the controls on my Goliath.

They're aged 6 and 7 now - big enough to reach the controls without the step, and in fact they play most of the time sat on a bar stool. They play multigame boards (ArcadeSD, JROK Multi-Williams, Neo Geo 161-in-1, etc.) more than anything else. It's a great way to introduce them to classic arcade gaming.

A small cabaret sized cab would be inexpensive, take up very little floor space (less than a cocktail), and they come up for sale on here and JAMMA+ very often.

You've got loads of options, and if you buy something that's priced sensibly (ie, from another collector), and it works out to be not quite right, you should pretty much get your money back when you sell it on.
