I think those are just very short throw. So moving the joystick (a small amount) moves the yellow plastic bits into the leaf switches.

But I haven't seen or used one in real life. I was going to get one to try, but I wanted a black balltop and the ball is not removable on this stick.

Also I'm not sure if these are 4/8 way switchable?

Shame the buggers charging £7 postage. Kind of makes it expensive to just try. Not as expensive as the Ultimarc 360 I bought to "just try" mind. That was over £70 IIRC after all the gubbins you had to buy to go with it like stiffer springs, wiring, etc.

Well, I've not completely finished the arcade stick that I'm making yet, so I've not wired the stick up yet but I reckon that it'll be OK. It's very low to the panel, but to be fair they are sold as pacman replacement style sticks and IIRC pacman sticks are also very low profile. On top of that I used 18mm MDF and it's a bit thick. The stick doesn't sit flush with the top edge of the panel, it's shy by about 3mm. If I find that I need the extra shaft length then I'll shape out a recess underneath for the whole joystick so that it does sit flush at the top.

Will report back again as soon as I've been able to wire it up check out how it actually plays.

I would say the yellow part sits inside a button sized hole in your wooden control panel. The sick swivels within that yellow part. The black mounting plate would be screwed to the underside of your panel, flush to the wood.
