Hi guys

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. I'm also looking for a carpet for my game room. Can't find diddly squat over here in the UK - but I did come across this which might look cool...

https://www.carpettilewholesale.co.uk/carpet-tiles/choose-by-colour/blues/modulyss-first-lines-carpet-tiles-navy-541-50cm-x-50cm

Looks like it's "for continuous castor use" so hopefully a good hard-wearing carpet tile. I'm considering ordering it.

Anyone else found anything decent recently?

Or does anyone know anywhere that does smaller carpet tiles? Like half the size of the std 50x50cm ones you get everywhere? At least then I could pattern it (e.g. have a space invaders character in the middle). My room is 3m square.

Cheers

Just cut the tiles into quarters? Your room is fairly small - personally speaking, I wouldn't have anything too 'busy' as it'll make the room look/feel smaller.

Hmm good points, thanks :)

I admit I didn't think about cutting the tiles into quarters. That's a lot of cutting though... I'm assuming using a rule, clamp and stanley would be the easiest/most accurate.

If I go that route I'd probably have plain all one dark colour tiles (or two very closely matched dark colour tiles alternated/checkered) and a lighter tile space invader pattern in the middle. I'll have to design it up in sketchup to see what it looks like!

I just used a steel ruler and a stanley knife to cut my fitted tiles. Cutting in half 'along the grain' of the pile may be a problem though, if the cut isn't in the furrow of the pile... if you see what I mean. Also remember that carpet has a 'nap' which needs to be in the same direction for carpet tiles. There's arrows on the back of tiles that should all be pointing in the same direction when laying the tiles. I'm not sure how much difference it makes, but I aligned all the tiles when I layed mine, just in case.

Nice! Expect your jaw to shatter on the floor when you're told how much it costs, though.

Mind you, if you order enough free samples, you may be able to do a small room.

Yeah its expensive but my mancave is also a gym so I was thinking of almost using it like a mat. But did you see it has a UV feature? Now thats pretty awesome:)

I’ve got some of that. All but 2 designs are special order with a minimum of 25m order. I was looking to order some and was in talks re costs and getting full details of all the options but they are cronicly slow to deal with and now the pandemic has put everything on stop. I’m probably looking to get a full 25m roll made on special order if I can find others who would be interested in some also.Wall_Street2020-06-04 00:42:45

Id definitely like to get some if you make an order. Was after the spectacle colour.

Saw this place in the US https://www.omegapatternworks.com/family-fun?page=2 These look great. Maybe even with a pallet shipment might work out cheaper :)

You can get the spectacle one in any length as it’s 1 of 2 they stock. The other designs which I think are more interesting and “out there” are the special order ones. When things start to open up I’ll start communications again to see whet the option are and if we can get a few people in on a group buy. Problem with these carpets is that the companies that make them aren’t interested in dealing with someone who only wants 30m2 as they normally deal with bowling alleys etc who are taking 100s of meters of the stuff.

They are plentiful in the US but I figures shipping, duty and then vat would make it too costly. Worth looking to see though as the pric per meter could be lower.

Has anyone tried this seller on Etsy ?

https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1288360555/star-rug-kite-stars-arcade-room-decor?click_key=032b49c615d123fe78ae55f4467ded5c49523055%3A1288360555&click_sum=42e9c4ff&pro=1&frs=1&sts=1&variation0=2798797908

update: I asked for a 20 x 20 cms sample so I'll copy and paste their WhatsApp exchange with me:

Are you able to send a sample of 20 cms x 20 cms ?

Yes we can send. Where will you use rugs? Home or commercial area?

Home. It is for a games room

Which size do you need?

180cms x 280 cms

Ok. Regarding the sample, shipping cost is aroun 20-25 EUR

Ok. Do I send payment on etsy ?

Sample cost is 15-20. EUR. TOTAL 40 EUR.

You can purchase smallest size pay on etsy 40 USD or send me 30 USD by Western Union

10 USD is Etsy commision

Ok. Let me think about it. Thanks

You’re welcome

Hmm. I've seen some middling reviews amongst many positive ones (they don't seem to be the same as the US quality stuff, but I know that shipping and taxes are prohibitive for that option), hence me asking for a sample, but I'm not sure I want to shell out 40 Euros for a sample when that would be a proportion going towards the final lot.

Is 2.8 x 1.8 going to be large enough for a games room? Know they said that's the largest they do but would advise looking for a larger one unless your room is only that size?

The largest size they have listed is that size, but I'm sure they can do larger.

But I have half my sitting room set up as an arcade (collecting a few more machines over the next few weeks and if I place my machines around it, I measured the area that hasn't got a machine in and it's roughly 2.8 x 1.8 so I was thinking of this size.

However, the odd mixed reviews have put me off and the pics from the reviews make it look mediocre quality, so was wondering if anyone had tried them ? The US stuff looks much better quality in various Youtube videos

I'm sure the US stuff is reasonable to good quality. I tried to buy some from US around 2007 and after some email exchanges with two companies, said was ready to order and pay and requested a quote and never heard back from either!

Ended up designing my own Robotron carpet but was not cheap!

Bloody hell RobotGreg - you designed your own ? Wow.

Just wish that there was something folks like us could just order. I've ordered 2 A5 sample pieces from Birch Carpets (the trade only folks who want a minimum of 25m2) so at least I can go round carpet shops and take them with me to show any sales folks (yeah, I'm that sad)
