Interested in views about Atari cabaret side art. As I understand it, when Atari shipped cabaret cabs they included an order slip, inviting customers to order side art if they fancied it. An optional extra then .... which in itself is a bit odd, almost suggests that Atari couldn't make their collective mind up about whether the side art was worth it ...

The reality, given the extreme rarity of Atari cabarets with side art, is that very few customers exercised the side art optional extra. Some did though:

There are rumours of Missile Command cabaret side art, but I've never seen any pics. AtariScott thinks he might have the films, so maybe MC art might one day surface.

Anyway, one of the reasons I'm keen to hear views, is that side art is now available for Asteroids Deluxe cabaret. And I'm wondering whether to stick this:

It's not cheap, will probably set me back about £120, and probably won't add £120 t o the cab's value should I ever come to sell. But, I've stuck a new CPO on the cab, and a new monitor overlay, and the blue on each really does look really nice. Plenty of that exact same blue in the side art. Dunno, I'm struggling with the decision about whether to go for it or not .... but in general, do people think the side art adds or detracts from Atari cabarets?

I think if i had very tidy cabarets i would probably go with the side art, but otherwise i think looks a bit odd on the woodgrain sides.
Saying that i do like that BZ art, never seen pics of the Tempest side art before.

I too think sideart looks good on solid colours but not on woodgrain. I do like the sideart though so I'd put it on the wall instead ;)

I still haven't talked myself out of this yet.

Here's some pics of the art applied to someone else's cab:

There's no doubting the quality of the print. If anything, I suspect the pics don't do it justice. Hmmm .... Dunno. I'm starting to lean towards getting it.

The concept is sound. I just don't like that particular art. Too much orange against the wood grain. But obviously that's just down to personal taste...

I'm not a fan of the sideart. Archer was looking to do full sideart (basically slimmed down versions of the UR art), they looked better but I still prefer woodgrain myself.

I'd say no, don't do it dude. Most Atari side art on the full upright cabinets looks amazing with the full side of screened art.

The cabarets with art look exactly what they are. Stickers that have been stuck on as an afterthought.

I don't really like the look of cabarets in general but I still think they look better with the plain woodgrain sides.

Got a link to the thread over there? I'd probably like Tempest, BZ and Asteroids but, as with all these things it comes at a time when I've just spent £14k so if it has to be now, it ain't going to happen!

Cools - thanks. At least if he's trickling them out then I stand a chance of affording it. Will see what next week brings...
