just out of curiosity - are you using the box pattern method? (not that i have anything against it.)

I've been playing the game since 1981 and have never heard of it.

I just play how the maze/robot arrangement dictates.

The box pattern is mentioned in the film "Chasing Ghosts", basically you just go round and round in a circle (i.e left door, then down door, right door, up door forever and apparently the rooms and robot locations are identical. If you can score that high without doing that you would have easiliy held the W/R before the box pattern was discovered! I suspect if you did a box pattern you could play indefinatley and break the current W/R.

I don't watch films and, quite frankly, I don't find game related stuff that interesting so you won't be surprised to hear that I have not seen the film.

I have always just gone from left to right regardless.

If the maze repeats the same four rooms endlessly I don't think it would keep me interested for very long.

You can teach a Monkey how to play a certain number of rooms, but you can't teach a man how to play Berzerk...with a four room pattern. (Nor can he enjoy the game, acquire skill or post an apples-to-apples competitive score with a cheat trick such as the box pattern. For the love of the game...play it straight. live life outside "the box".

Great score favoredson. Sorry to hear you haven't seen the movie. However, the most important thing is your apparent love for what I think is the hardest game of skill and strategy that I've ever seen. Most people have never even seen the slow bullets (Set 2)version. They can't appreciate the different skill you must implore to be at the level of success that you have obtained. It really is a differnt game than the more popular fast bullets (Set 1). Congratulation on your excellent achievement! Joel West

I have to agree with you, Joel.

I gave the box pattern a try and I kept messing up by automatically going for the right door. It feels very unnatural after 30 years of playing it straight.

As for the game version, I used to help out in an arcade most evenings from late '81 to mid '83 and this is the version they had.

I used to play the other version in another local arcade and enjoyed playing both versions equally.

I understand Garry. Someone said that you could do the box pattern and play indefinitely, not true. A long time, yes, but you still only have 5 men max. Unless you are a good guesser, you can only do the box pattern on your first man, then you must become a real player. During the box the rooms remain the same 4 but the robot positions change as well as the # of robots and thus time for Evil Otto to appear. Yes, it runs the score up but I consider it cheating, point pressing, like trapping the spider in Centipede, etc. If you ever want a copy of Chasing Ghost send me an email with a post address and I will send you an edited copy (without the porn and foul language but all other content in-tack). Keep playing and getting that score up. In a few months, I may try to give you some competition, for as you know: "iron sharpens iron". Competition brings out the best among the best. Congrats again! joel.west.now@gmail.com for a copy or for anyone else wanting one.

Never really understood the need for the porn pictures in the film apart from perhaps making Robert Mruzeck (sp?) look even weirder. If anyone's not seen it I'd recommend it as a good watch, pretty much essential for an arcade player/collector. Thanks for offering these up Joel.

Have to say I'm in total agreement with the whole box pattern thing. I never liked doing that sort of thing, as you say it just goes against the spirit of the game. So the whole centipede spider trap and asteroids saucer hunting wasn't ever for me. Personally I'm never going to be a world record holder, I just enjoy playing the games as they were supposed to be played.

Welcome aboard Joel, be interesting to see some pictures of your latest high scores :)

Holy! Indeed welcome, have seen Chasing Ghosts, and as all here, i agree it´s _not_ the way the game was meant to be played (Box pattern)
I too have a working Berzerk UR, and my HS is in the 10K+ area, though, can´t find the photo atm. but it´s the kind of game where you think, damn, this is fun - just one more play and then to bed....

Put please, post you "warm up" scores in pursuit of the big one here, would be interesting to follow!!

i'd love to see a live game of a similar score, can't imagine how someone can dodge the bullets at such a ridiculous speed. to me berzerk is a game of sheer luck from a certain point onwards (maze layout, placement of robots, ...)!

I think you're confusing the two versions. Set2 is the fast Otto/slow bullets version.

I just checked TG and spotted a familiar name...
