Hi there,

Just wondering whats everyones thoughts are for:

- 1. best arcade racer for replay value

- 2. best arcade racer for 2+ players

From the machines I have actually played I would have to say:

- 1. F355 or Crazy Taxi (I just love that game)

- 2. F355 or Daytona USA

Daytona with its false physics is the clear winner, it was designed to be fun, moderate to master and appealing to the eye. F355 with its realistic handling just isn’t fun, it appeals to hardcore players. A lot of people will give it a go but not come back. I worked in an arcade at the time and I could see the coins in the cash box for both so I know Daytona got the public plays.

Crazy Taxi is a different ball game, I’de day it was more popular than F355, however in the arcade it was a bit of a novelty and eventually superseded by others. The arcade I worked in still has a fully functional F355 to this day though, so it didn’t get beaten up!

I did see larger groups of lads playing Sega Rally though, a four player rally minted money faster than a four player Daytona as the handling is a bit more forgiving and has more fun moments.lix2021-04-21 00:24:13

This is hard as so many different racer seem the same on outside but play so differently...

Personally to answer your question:

1. Crazy Taxi and Safari Hunt I always enjoyed playing that at arcades as it was a game you weren't ever going to complete on a credit (well i never could). I like that Initial D had a kind of story mode so that added a new depth to racing, but you needed lots of credits!

2. I have had more fun playing Sega Rally and Initial D head to head.

fun factor: always enjoyed OutRun2, but after you got your first clear... and realized that there was no logic in the scoring system (well I couldnt regardless of route) it was more to play for fun and look good... the 2 player was fun but it was a straight dash to finish, no style!!

Initial-D series are great for home play, you NEED the save cards though so you can upgrade your car and go through all the trials.

OutRun 2 SP has huge amounts of replay value, you can do the Special Challenge Stage stuff aiming for AAA rating on all the courses, and the continuous mode where you can try and do the full 15 courses from regular OR2 and SP in one go, it's really good fun - but is usually turned off in the menu so a lot of people never actually know it even exists!

Crazy taxi - a racer?
F355, I have and like, but a bit crap for a simulation, when pc sims are so good and do it far better. However 2 next to each other is a bonus with friends. Even Forza on xbox 360 with the right wheel, is technically better.

I would say by a decent margin, Sega rally 2 is the best twin racer out there.

Rubber band effect prevents it being the best multi player, however racing against best times is more fun, especially if there is a skill difference between you and your mates.

There is a fast time table for: every track x every car & Every car, on al l3 tracks combined. (That gives a lot of tables to work through, and keeps you coming back.)

F355 wins on 1to1 fair race here as rubber banding can be turned off.

Initial D is great if you like the street seen and drifting. (have my machine working, and waiting for full restore before enjoying properly.)

Sega rally 1, is slightly behind sr2.

Out Run 2, is great for people who may want to drive, but aren't necessarily into cars or proper racing. Great fun. - haven't given it more than 30min yet

Pole Position is great for that "just one more go" feeling to see if you can beat your best score.

Outrun 2 IMO is amazing. Yes you can drift around all of the corners, but if you keep your drifting to a minimum, you can go much much faster. In two player its great as well, as harder routes through the game are shorter than the easier ones, but you have more chance of crashing, so its risk vs reward.

For me SR1 is ahead of SR2 for game play, its very satisfying to piece together a good run, and from the gameplay videos I have seen here, everyone seems to have a slightly different approach.
One thing that really helps keep interest is battling for fastest times within the community.

The second does have more cars that all handle differently, so there's possibly more long term appeal.

Daytona 2 also has a number of different cars of varying difficulty, and power edition has the extra long track, with sections from the normal 3 stuck together.

One game I haven't seen mentioned yet is Indy 500, its got a great sense of speed, one I personally really enjoy.

Ive yet to try it properly, but looks cool, and so does vr racing,

But one thing that this thread shouts out is SEGA

Yeah Sega really managed to nail the satisfying arcade driving physics, without going over the top.
I think of Indy 500 as a cross between VR and Daytona, it hasn't quite got the personality of the others, but as an experience its right up there.

thank ive asked this before - but what cab can it go in and still have ffb etc?

Only direct swap is Touring Cars I think, not sure about Le Mans as that has the same FFb motor type, without ffb is much easier, had it working in my SR for a while, then moved into an old Taito cab, to make a kind of dedicated Indy upright.

Outrun 2 SP is still the best arcacer racer there is for both replay and 2-player.

To me Crazy Taxi has the most fantastic replay value.

And Sega Rally is just awesome 2-player.

Yes.... i'm a fan of Sega Arcade Racers. :)

Surely for multiplayer it has to be Daytona 1 with the extra long lap settings.

I really enjoy Sega Rally 1 for single player, but the catch up/rubber banding on multiplayer is too agressive, and can't be turned off... At least you can skip the accepting entries for multiplayer screen on it though.

The already mentioned racers are all much fun imo, for different reasons.

For me, San Fransico Rush the Rock is awesome for replay value, as a race is never the same and quite challenging.

The surround sound system and "feel "with the track are great.

Also the jumps and shortcuts make for a good multiplayer experience.

As for Indy 500, I might have a preference for Ace Driver; Victory Lap.

If you buy an Initial D cabinet, you can install a net-dim, and then boot any of the naomi driving games.

You can also fit a chihiro in there to play outrun 2.

Or buy an outrun 2, and pickup a Naomi2 with net-dim to play any of the naomi games
