So I removed the side of the red resistor R141 that goes to the neck and made that go to the blue side R143 and vice versa so end of R141 now goes to where the end of R141 was connected.

Results below, so I also made a picture of that blueish leaderboard screen and there the effect is always much less same as it was with the blue before but now it is red.

not sure but that TOP outline is white so it is made up from all 3 colors.
so euh no Blue shadow but it is red now so not sure what I should think about it, and why only when it gets warm, at start it is always perfect so some component is heating up and causing this issue?

idea,
power it up and let it get bad,
then unplug the power to the monitor for 10 minutes
then plug it back in and see if it's instantly bad (gameboard) or if it takes 5 minutes(monitor)
those green connectors are usually very tight btw

Ok that was a great idea! So I powered on the cabinet for 10 minutes and it was pretty bad, so then I unplugged the monitor for 10 minutes and plugged it in again and really bad right away so it seems its the game board!?

sounds like it - so now mabe a can of freezer spray will be handy to see where the fault is.
or maybe it's getting hot and just touching stuff will find it
are the 2 boards stuck together like the original, or does it use ribbon cables?

btw, can you dump the roms? i dont think it's in mame - i'll check

Yes 2 board on top of eachother connected with 3 ribbon cables, and its probably on the back board as there the connector is I did some checking at the 3 x 3 resistors where the RGB signal passes through and at first the R3 seemed to not give any resistance realy needed to poke it hard had some really flux residue it seems, so cleaned that and reflowed those pin and also the RGBS output connector although it seemed fine, what I did notice is that the 74hc273 on the right was replaced by a 74hc273b1 removed the flux residue there.

I had been checking some roms like on the top board and the sound board top board matched hangon but one of the ones on the sound board was different so I used the hangon rom but that messed it up completely, that sound rom is actually the same but data starts at hex 0x4000 instead of 0x0000 very strange... the bottom board roms I didnt check yet.

It does show the 3D rotating Hang-On logo but I don't think it shows Sega but cannot check now as that board is not connected at the moment, but pretty sure no Sega.

So lucky that someone soldered some thick wires on those 2 boards so I don't even need to plug in the power connectors makes it much easier to let the boards hang in the cabinet with easy access to the back board.

So two Gals that are socketed get pretty warm but not hot, but just found 2 small boards feel very hot to touch after 5 minutes but they hide under another board that is slotted in the backboard not sure if this is the same on the real hang on board? Hard to check as I need the board and look at the screen but I think it's changing the behaviour of the shadow! Tomorrow I will and start there and keep you updated.

Thanks a lot for helping I think we are getting close.

I really don't know what is going on with this game... So I did notice when you switch of the cabinet for 3 seconds all is fine again even when it was on for 1 hour?!

All the boards that slotted in the backboard got removed and connectors cleaned, so now it actually seems to be better? Not fixed for sure but i never comes further as like 5 cm and resets back with most screen switching like from scores back to game.

I now added a switch on the 5v line of the gameboard and indeed just switching off the 5v for a second or 2 puts it back in perfect condition!

i dont know what you mean by backboard,
got any pcb pictures?

the closest boardset's i have had are outrun and enduro-racer
similar circuits but outrun is 2 boards and enduro is a mess of seperate boards for different stuff.
