Board turned up with a couple of program ROMs and the Z80 missing, rather than replace the missing roms I took the remaining ones out and decided to install one of Philmurr's daughtercards with the moon cresta hiscore save . To my surprise the game booted;
The row of characters was due to a failing 2114 RAM at 3F, there was also a bad 7400 at 2S causing incorrect colours (looked a bit like colour clash on a spectrum).
I burned the Gremlin character roms to replace the bootleg ones on the board... then reburned the sprite ones as my bootleg has 16 swapped sprites (thanks to the mame driver for that solution).
