Mostly junk. What do you want to read and / or program with it? If it's more modern stuff then they don't tend to be too bad, but give it something 2764 and below to program and you may as well give up. I had a TOP2005 for some years and I ended up giving it away as a brucey bonus when I sold my Data I/O 29B.

Oh, and don't get me started on the so called IC testing routines.

I have one, they are not great for arcade boards. Has trouble reading 2708/2716/2732. Software is also pretty crap, gets chip timings wrong so you have to keep manually adjusting timings and overwriting.

Now have a gq-3x which wasn't much more expensive and a lot better for most things.

you mean one of these?

the main reason i want a programer is i got a bubble bobble pcb that is faulty and i wanted to try and see if i can find the fault myself but the only tools i got ATM is a soldering iron and a DMM so i want to start building up some tools but i dont want to jump in the deep end with a £200+ programer when i may only use it once in a blue moon

looking at the bubble bobble pcb it has a mix of 27256 and 27512 eproms so i would need something that can read these

thanks for all the replies

Yes - but for that price you might want to get direct from manufacturor (mcumall) as a pack with the 16 bit adaptor included as well. Very fast delivery from EDIT: Australia Canada and sent as a 'gift'. I was thinking getting one second hand, they don't come up that ofte second hand, but when they do they are about £35.

Both will do 27256/27512. If it is only for 1 PCB, why not just borrow a programmer? then you can decide if you want to buy a better programmer later. I have a Top853 that I don't mind if it dissapears for a week.

that is a very nice offer from you, i have looked at the mcumall website and they have some good prices on there by the looks of things

if you could let me have a go with your spare top853 that would be awesome, can at least see if i can get my head around it or if i need to send the pcb out for repair

i can confirm a GQ-3X from mcumall will do the job, right out of the box and without any adapter needed (for bubble bobble eproms).
full pack would be a plus in the future.

keep in mind it read from 2716/2516 onward.... and no PAL/GAL/BPROM support, but it's ok for most average arcade users

I used a TOP2049 for CPS2 and MVS stuff and all of my MAME dumping for years - remarkably simple to use and that is a fantastic price.

Check the device list to see if the devices you want to work with are supported.

For that price you really can't go wrong IMVHO

Cheers bud,

Ralph.

apologies as its a bit offtopic .. but is it possible to swop roms on a CPS1 board? like from SFII WW to Hyper fighting say?

I've seen a few forum posts referring to ghouls and ghosts rom swops, and wondered if these were CPS1, or boots.

I've tried googling and the AO wiki, but couldnt see anything, apologies if this sort of thing cant be discussed here,

thanks!

Several CPS1 games use particular C boards to stop you from swopping games simply by changing the eproms

however, some of the games are now available in 'suicide free' versions, so if you did the necessary C board modifications and used these images instead then it should be possible. (but limits the games you can select from)

Check here for more info
