I bought 2 Master System games earlier today and my wife thought it was a bit strange that I don't own the console to play them on. To be honest it is a bit strange but I am looking at getting one ASAP.

I suppose it's like buying baby clothes and equipment before the child's born, your just preparing for the eventuality....

Does anyone do this or has done this? I mean the games not the baby stuff

I bought several SNES and Gameboy originals before i purchased the consoles.

My just kind of shrugged and went "i guess that means your getting the consoles as well then"

I used to do this kind of thing.

Thing is.. unless it's a limited run release or a rare collectors edition, there's no real point... inevitably you have a good chunk of time where prices drop after release as people lose interest, so it's usually prudent to be patient.

I remember buying CD singles back in the day, before I had a CD player, CDs had usually 4 tracks, compared to the cassette releases with only 2, so I thought I'd buy as I mean to go on. :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one that has done these things, I won't think I'm too crazy for doing it.

The master system games were only £2 each (boxed with manuals) which I thought was a good price and couldn't turn it down.

When my other half was pregnant with my son.I did contemplate calling him Pc engine even though I'd never owned one.Not sure if that's the same.Maybe it's "the same but different" as my old Dad would say.

Oh man, I only picked up a Saturn a few years ago, and yet I bought a copy of Burning Rangers back when it was actually fairly cheap. Must be at least 15 years in-between?

Can anyone beat that?

Good call on the MS, make sure you get a MK1 because that is one sexy heap of cheap plastic. And a light gun and Rescue Mission.

15yrs is definitely what I would call planning for the future.

I do like the look of the MK1 however they are usually more expensive. Is there anyway to figure out which game is built in to the system?

I bought a PC-FX game around 13 years ago just to have one but while I have various PC engines I still don't own a PC-FX.
If I ever see a cheap Neo Geo aes cart I will probably buy one even though I will probably never own the console due to price.

It's all about the artwork, the look the feel, it all brings back memories. The funny thing is that while I'm mainly into UK stuff when it comes to arcade collecting I'm more into Japanese console stuff, apart from the Master System as I had the UK one.
I had the idea a while back to try and buy one game from every console that ever existed but realised I'd much rather spend my time and money looking for arcade stuff.

So in short, no it's not weird to buy a game for a console you don't own. Not in my opinion anyway

Oh, that reminds me... I won an AES copy of KoF 96 on neo-geo.com in 2002 and I only bought the console last year. Of course I've had an MVS during that time, but still.

I was also holding back due to the price but finally caved. My dream of finding one in a charity shop was maybe a bit far fetched

Not me. In fact I've been gradually selling off my consoles as I never use them.

(not mocking anyone of course

, I'm probably a rather strange, scattershot 'collector' of tech stuff)
