I know they aren't what they once were, but now they won't be even that as the entire company has filed for bankruptcy

Yeah I saw that today also.. They've gone so many times now i've gone beyond caring.

Just wish someone _decent_ would take the brand/name over and do something truly innovative with it.

Not entirely sure he's innovative enough in todays age, what we need is someone like him, todays modern version, to do it.

Chapter 11 bankruptcy doesn't mean the same in the US as 'Bankrupt' does in the UK. It's actually Bankruptcy Protection and is something that a company does to ensure they can re-negotiate their debts, restructure and most importantly, survive. So they're not gone yet. It happened to a company I used to work for, they did that, a few years later sold of the UK business, a few later the French business, and as far as I'm aware are still in business today.

So, regardless of whether they're anything like they were or not (and obviously they're not), it's certainly not over and out just yet.

One of the most iconic and well known brands in the world,even just with the legacy I.P they should have been able to make a profit?

According to the BBC article about this, Atari US is profitable, but their French owners (Atari SA - formerly Infogrames) have been struggling for years. Therefore Atari US have filed for chapter 11 protection in order to break away from their parent company which they don't want to be dragged down with.
