Can I apply vinyl stickers to water based paint?

Hi all,

I've searched the forum and other places online and can't get a definite answer on this. I'm trying to find out if I can apply vinyl side art and control panel on top of water based paint? Lots of places recommend oil based paint but I already have water based paint and time is of the essence as I'm wanting to get the build done before my birthday party and water based paints dry more quickly. I can't really find anywhere that says that vinyl stickers won't stick to water based paints.

Can anyone tell me if I'm ok using water based primer and top coat or if I need to make the top coat vinyl? Or can I even use a varnish on top of the top coat if it sticks better to that as I already have some varnish I can use.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

For those interested I've put some posts about my build on my blog here. http://retromash.com/tag/home-arcade-machine/ Several more updates coming in the next 3 weeks as I finish my cab.

Thanks a lot.

As the guys have already said, go for it, you have no worries here.

As for paint, If you are using a water based primer you should stick to a water based top coat as different chemicals in paint when they come into contact with each other can 'pickle' which can have like an 'orange peel' effect and can also crack and become a real mess. I assume you're using Acrylic paint?

As for varnish, give that a miss unless of course you were looking for a high gloss finish. If you are using a lacquer ensure the lacquer is also water based.

Good luck

Best to leave it as long as you can before applying the vinyl after you've painted it. It may feel completely dry after a few hours but it takes a lot longer to cure. Although if you need to do it quickly to fit in with your time frame I'm sure it will be fine.
Let us know if you need any advice applying your cpo or sideart.

I've wrapped vehicles (and various other things) with all sorts of terrible paint jobs and different types of finishes over the years and I always find a way to make it stick. When wraps fail it's usually due to mistakes in the application of the vinyl.
