Well, just cancelled my next-gen preorder for a PS4
smiley36.gif

Partly financial reasons (just booked a holiday instead) but actually, more practical reasons. No backward compatibility.

It's not the lack of BC that bothers me as such, it's more the shear amount of stuff under the TV. There just isn't enough room for yet another box under the TV, plus all 4 of my HDMI's are used now. PS3 had backward compatibility at launch and that eased the transition to the new console, even if only in the mind - knowing that you COULD if you wanted to, I'm sure they could have managed it if they really wanted to.

May get one next spring when there's enough out for it to ditch the PS3 completely (and my finances have recovered). But not now.

We could always sell the 360 I guess. That never gets used any more thanks to the gold tax requirement for pretty much everything these days.

might get a ps4, despite no backward compatability im sure many games will be ported as most are running on established rendering engines.

ps3 will probly become a media server

defo not buying another M$ console... pay a sub even to surf the net? f**k off!

I keep hearing that people won't do it because of Backwards compatibility so I thought, how many mainstream manufacturers released consoles in the UK that had 100% backward compatibility?

Atari:
Atari 2600 on 5200- NO (and not sold in UK)
Atari 5200 on 7800- NO (and not sold in UK)
Atari xx00 on Atari Jaguar - NO

Nintendo:
NES on SNES - NO
SNES on N64 - NO
N64 on Gamecube - NO

Sega:
Megadrive on Saturn - NO
Saturn on Dreamcast - NO
Master System on Megadrive - £40 for the converter so, yeah - NO

Microsoft:
Xbox on XBox 360 - software emulation and not fully compatible with all game - NO

Sony:
PS2 on PS3 - Partial depending on model, time of release and software emulation - NO
PS1 on PS3 - Partial depending on model, time of release and software emulation - NO

So what was truly backward compatible?
Atari 2600 on 7800- YES
Gamecube on Wii - YES
Wii on WiiU - YES
PS1 on PS2 - YES

Help me out if I've missed any? Basically, in the old days, we sold 'em, part ex'd them or stored them. Then 20 years later realised the whole thing was stupid idea and went nuts on eBay to buy them all back

My PS3 had PS2 backwards compatibility.

Incidentally, I think people may be missing the point here. It's not because of the fact I want to play the games so badly that I would go out and buy them all again, thus keeping Sony and Microsoft happy because I'm lining their pockets. It's because the Mrs has a shelf full of PS3 games that she hasn't finished playing yet and therefore I want to be able to stick those discs into something (that will play them of course!), without buying them all over again, virtual, streaming or otherwise.

It looks like the only thing that allows us to do that is the PS3, therefore that's what we'll stick with for now. I'm not a console gamer any more - I play PC games, and luckily I can still play games I bought many years ago
smiley2.gif

Also, the history of what did and didn't provide BC is meaningless. We're at a fairly unique point in time here, possibly only seen once before with PS3 and X360 where many, MANY people already own all the consoles, a set top box like Sky+ / Virgin etc., and quite possibly something else like a media PC, Apple TV, etc. Companies have been fighting for dominance of the TV for years now, there's just only so much room under that TV - or more importantly, only so many power points and network points (wireless doesn't cut it for streaming in my house).

We've not seen this amount of competition in the TV space before which is why I believe the job of a games console should, more than ever be just that - a games console, maybe a movie player with at least parital BC to ease the transition to the new generation.

I've started being conscientious about what I buy in terms of disc or download. Download will simply be a case of re-downloading it when you buy a PS4. You don't need to re-buy your purchases from PlayStation Store.

But obviously the discs won't be backwardly compatible. I don't see this as a massive issue. As Milky points out, most consoles lack backward compatibility and it's unfair to judge or disregard a console for this. The fat PS3 was backwards compatible in most instances, but it was so hard to get it working within financial viability that they had to phase it out. Fair play to them for trying. Only 1st gen Wii's were backward compatible with GC too, so it's not even a massive selling point now in my opinion. Furthermore I've got lots of PS1 games and they all run fine on my Slim PS3, which is a perk for sure, but I've obviously still got my PS1 and my PS2.

I just don't want to keep buying disc based games that I can't play on the PS4. If it costs a tenner more to have them as downloads that will transfer to my PS4 when I eventually get one, then so be it.

All that said, I ain't buying a PS4 till they're at least a year or two old, with bugs fixed with patch downloads and a massive price drop to around the £200 mark
smiley36.gif
. In fact as I type this I have a vague memory of Capcom saying that Street Fighter 5 will likely be around 2015. I imagine by then the PS4 will drop in price, so that's when I'll make the jump: when SF5 is released

If you imported a day 1 model, yes, you will have hardware emulation. If you bought a UK model you will only have, at best, software emulation of the EE so the compatibility list is reduced greatly.

I totally see your point though - the companies will try and fleece you again for the same game you already own on a previous system (possibly "remastered" to sweeten the deal or just increase the premium). But to get round this, you keep the existing machine just like we used to. Again, space becomes a bit of an issue but we are people that collect machines the size of wardrobes! Space issues can be resolved through half-arsed measuring and promises of gifts to our understanding other half.

and apart from one game I'll buy with it. The rest will be digital only this generation, unless a special game comes out like Mass Effect 4

Personally I'm waiting for the dust to settle after the feeding frenzy of initial release. Let some others find the bugs/issues etc :) Also my 360 doesn't really get any use at all these days. I kinda played more when we had some multiplayer sessions going on but that's disappeared these days. So all in I might not bother at all unless there's some killer app (for me that's usually a Star Wars game).

Considering Sony are still bricking PS3 consoles with every other software update, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for bug fixes on next gen consoles

Not gone for either of the NGenners. I've not seen anything that makes me go OMG must have which felt very surprising as I often appreciate (aka buy) technology for technology's sake. Remember the animated T-Rex on the PS1 demo disk? Played that for hours because of what it represented at the time
smiley4.gif
But from a nerd perspective the current gen & PC titles have got all the flash I need to see so NG just isn't impressing me enough to create lust.

I'm like Dan - I played my 360 most when we played socially and what really sucks is that I'm good at COD/Zombies now yet when we all played I'd be the one dying 2 rounds in and talking crap over the group chat with Smythe!

Maybe something like Oculus Rift could move me to join the upgrade grind?

Haha I remember that T-rex!

I am mostly getting it for Forza 5, and Battlefield 4. w00t.

Project Spark looks excellent too.

Oculus Rift is the only thing that's got me interested in recent times. If they can overcome the motion sickness issues it will be the future :)

That project Spark looks like a rather cool cross between Little Big Planet and the X360 killer launch title Kameo - which I absolutely loved! Thankfully though, no XBox One required as it's also planned for Windows 8

I preordered the ps4 but can't say I'm brimming with excitement over it, it's probably me, I just can't find any love for console gaming atm & in particualr modern games, one thing is for sure if Sony cannot keep up with customer demands & cash trade in prices at places like cex move above what I've paid I don't think I will be able to resist not selling it, then in the new year when prices go down/package deals start to filter in I can rebuy.

edit : not that I actually expect that to happen, I said that with the wii u & it's still under the tv gathering dust.

Project Spark is coming out for the Xbox 360 too. There's been a recent new showing of PS and the Kinect motion integration - have you seen it?

I remember that fondly. I also remember playing the original Tomb Raider when you first crawl out of a narrow hole in the rocks into that underground forest and a huge T-rex comes sprinting at you. That was the biggest moment for me. Good times!

I was going to pre-order a PS4, until I saw the launch titles, and there is absolutely nothing that takes my fancy, as I'm not a fan of FPS games. Just checked the XBox1 launch titles, and see that Forza is on the list, so coupled with the fact Microsoft have back-peddled on things such as the machine always has to be connected to the internet, and use of used games, I might just go for one of those instead. This might be the first console I've bought at launch since the PS2!
