Our (now ex) car had a similar thing, it was during the snow/cold period earlier this year end of march I think, was driving back on the A27 and clutch hit the floor as I was slowing down to a red light roundabout. Just had to let the momentum take me across the roundabout and up on to a verge, was pretty hairy going through the red lights, but I could hardly bring it to a halt bang in the middle of a dual cariage way. Turned out to be the quadrant, parts were not much, but the labour was, something crazy like £150 in total of money I did not have, Tax, insurance and AA cover were up for renewal on 1st may, and there was no way on earth it would pass the MOT this year, so as of 1st may have gone car less. Thankfully its saving us a some money now, only main issue is trying to do the shopping.

I have tried it once so far, I find it okay for dry stuff, but fresh things like bread, milk, fruit veg etc, proves a pain, so have ended up walking to town most days to buy the odd thing, I much prefered my old saturday 8am be at Morrisons door, do a mega shop and be done in an hour.

I hate cars...... and tend to run them into the ground...... Noticed the exhaust was blowing tonight... so must need a new back box now...... That will be £75 ?

The car must be worth £350 if that (R reg Astra - prolly £50 if that from we buy any car), but its been pretty kind to me apart from needing a new head gasket a couple of years ago. (£400) and needs maybe £300 if that, of work a year to keep on the road including the tires...... I bought it 7 years ago for £850 and its been the best motor I'ver ever had !!! - It's never broken down yet, touch wood !!

The one before that, lost me lots of cash....£4K+ and only had it for few months.... and ended up scrapping it.....

Some you win some you loose... If that car is ok.... I tend to keep it..... This one practically pays me to drive it !!! (less than £500 a year over 7 years - Thats got to be cheap motoring !!)

@idchappy, im pretty sure most of the work wasnt required. i think i will start using main dealers, these wee independant garages seem to rip me off. the rav usually costs between £500 and £1k each year, but its rock solid and apart from a blow out, its never let me down.

I have an 06 Corsa - from new.
last year - it cost £1500

Gearbox failure ( its an auto ) + a £400 MOT.

This year - Just had service and MOT - ok bar a tyre... but the rattling I occasionally hear is the timing chain.

needs replacing - another £400! - I gotta ring round to find a better price if I can tho!

£400 for a timing chain on a VX isn't bad. I got quoted £500 for a Vectra I had, since it was rattling, and though "ah it'll be fine for a couple months yet". 2 weeks later, dead engine, punted it on ebay for £300

yeah I am getting mine fixed next week,
It has been rattling for a long time ( about 6 months - on and off )

Also occasionally feels like its mis-firing..

I have a long run in it mid-June, so I gotta be sure its good to get me there and back!

Not a VX tho, just a Corsa Active....
