[ukvac] Charity Meet... first report

Afternoon all!

Well.... after a couple of days to recover from the stresses and strains of the weekend I am now in a position to fill you all in on the end results of this weekends charity meet.

I am very pleased to say all went well from both the Star Wars Day and my own personal challenge of the sponsored diet. Figures are still being calculated by our very own Guddler (now known as Sir Treasurer in the fundraisers) but early reports are that it is looking good to be our most successful days so far! The day itself went without incident or a hitch and feedback from the punters appears to be good.

From a VAC angle a big thankyou to Rav for providing two top machines, Galaga Ms Pac reunion and a SW Trilogy (which was one of the stars of the show) and as big a thankyou to Andy B and Kirsty who once again were conned into running the stand for the entire day... sorry guys :))) Gud also brought down his SW table, Gorf and Phoenix... so all in all a great showing by the VAC :))) As soon as Martin releases the figures I will let you all know how much was raised by the VAC but as always a great showing by all those who attended!! Many thanks guys :)))

As for my little pet project, my starting weight was 16 stone 7 pounds on 13th September with the aim of loosing 3 stone for the show on the 13th March. Pleased to say that my weight on Sunday was recorded at 12 stone 13 pounds :))) SMASHED IT! :))))

Massive thanks to those who sponsored me... im afraid I will be in touch very soon. For anyone who may have missed what I was doing all moneys raised by this sponsored diet are going directly to Cancer Research UK so if you feel like you would like to contribute please contact me at bazfish@guddler.co.uk and anything donated will be added to the amount raised by the UKVAC.

On a darker note for me, around a month ago I was accused of playing what is now called the "charity guilt card" by a member of both UKVAC and UKPIN. I was publicly barracked for criticising the number of sponsors I had received from UKVAC. I did not reply to this at the time as I was too angry and upset to reply in a rational way. I did write a couple of mails but fortunately did not post either.... and for that I am glad. The first was a torrent of abuse... the second more cultured... but both not appropriate. I decided to wait until after I had completed my task before I would reply... so now I will.

My response to playing the "charity guilt card"? GUILTY AS CHARGED! Unfortunately I have found that it is the only way you can get most peoples attention... shame that.

But as much as I admire the guts of the person who wrote the mail, for actually standing up and saying what most people (ironically including me most of the time) actually think about charity's and fundraising... I will say this... when you are five months into a six month sponsored diet THE FACT THAT PEOPLE THINK THIS WAY IS NOT WHAT YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO HEAR!

I did think about turning the diet in but I swung it around and actually used it as an inspiration... but it did not help at the time.

Anyway... just note my response above and be assured that I will be discussing the matter with the person in question when I meet them face to face at the next meet.... if they turn up.... which they never seam to do.... funny that :)

Last word. A massive thanks to all those who turned up at the weekend. Full report on the final figures and the actual UKVAC meet side to follow.

All the best

here here, big thanks to Baz and Martin for arranging everyting, even
down to the taxi's to and from the pub!
Good to see some new faces.

Also on the darker note, the 'person' who accused baz of playing the
charity card - when your sitting in the doctors being told you may be
dead in 6 months, tell him you dont want treatment, after all you
wouldn't want to be helped by a charity would you? tw*t

Re: [ukvac] Charity Meet... first report

Here, here...

I've kept completely out of the UKVAC side this year as I've been WAY too busy
to even contemplate it.

But needless to say, thanks for all the support and my sincere apologies to
anyone that was hoping to grab a chinwag with me. As per usual it barely
happened and i really don't know how Bruce finds the time to be so sociable.
If i seemed rude it was not intentional, i was merely stressed :)

Martin.
(Guddler to you lot)

Re: [ukvac] Re: Charity Meet... first report

Andy dude,

Although I do think donating money to charity is a good thing, I have to say
I can see where both arguments are coming from.

I understand the shock of having cancer or someone close to you having it
must be a very horrible thing, but that will never stop peoples points of
view - freedom of speech is a wonderful thing if used in a constructive way
(and I don't want to piss bazfish or guddler off here) which James did do...
(that evil evil man)

It would be cool if more money was thrown at the root causes of cancer;
peoples diets and eating habits, pollution (both of body and surroundings) -
I do think that would be a good thing as that's the only real reason cancer
is becoming more common - due to lack of healthy eating, eating in excess
and breathing in fag ash and carfumes....

Anyhow back to arcade collecting, let's all keep up the good work and all be
very opinionated and all very understanding at the same time :)

/o

[ukvac] Re: Charity Meet... first report

totally agree, but belittleing someones goals isn't really on, I
completly understand why people dont donate, we are all sick of tin
rattlers comming round the pubs and then *probably* pocketing the
cash.

at the end of the day if someone is trying to achive somthing that
helps other people, weather you agree with there methods or not, if
you dont have something positive to add, then its simple, say nothing.

on a much lighter note, you recovered from your early morning yet? LOL
