I cracked open the RS232 protocol analyser tonight. Didn't get it working though, but I've a feeling the TX & RX signals may need to be connected to a load, or perhaps the RX needs to have a pull-up? I was testing out one of the cheap 4 pin bluetooth serial dongles intended for Arduino. I know it works as I connected it to my arduino earlier so I could set the baud and name etc. in the firmware.

So I figured I could rig up +5v & GND and then just pair it, connect to it, send characters to it in the terminal app and have them come up on the protocol analyser, zilch on the pins at all. Hence maybe they need to be connected to a load (or sink?)

Not sure. Looking forward to seeing a protocol analyser in action though when I do suss that bit out...
