Hey all , So its been over 2 years and the past week I have been having a look at a few boards.

2 Are heading to the 'Hard Box' (Aliens & Ghost n goblins) but this one I have managed to sort wiht out too much trouble for a change !!! So I thought I would share it with anyone who wants to look.

Ok so we have an original 3 Stack Commando by Capcom. (Not to be confused with Captain Commando !)

1) No Character sprites at all.
2) Background all over the places including blocky sometime
3) No audio at all - Dead.
4) Some solder on edge connector making it hard to slot connector on.

According to my Rom Ident the board is Commando (World):-

A Pic of the board , As arrived :-

A few of the faulty screens :-

Bricks are all wrong on this (Compared to mame)

So first thing I do on EVERY board no matter what the issue is a full visual , Strip clean and check each ROM. Even if there is no issues I like to do this and make sure all is good as some issues you cant see till you get down and dirty. So on first inspection the board looks in OK condition but like all boards it has some knocks, Dents & scratched but nothing to deep that is effecting anything. There is a cap with a snapped leg in the audio area as well.

So after stripping and checking there is one ROM that is faulty :-

New ROM burnt & Fitted here (Swapped sticker over best I could !):-

Thats in the sprites area so I have my fingers crossed that thats the issue with the missing men & helicopter ! Burned a new one and popped it in. Rebuild the 3 layers and got ready to test , I was not expecting it all to work as my luck is not good and...........

Blow me down we have ALL graphics working and ok ! Helicopter is back and all looks good , All controls now tested as well and pass (Didnt test this first time on the bench)

Turn my attention to the edge connector , Not bad so not a big job :-

Removed solder and cleaned.

No audio but I was not expecting a clean to resolve that unless the ROM was faulty and that was fine. Only 1 cap looks dodgy here :-

Removed this , There is some corrosion on the board so cleaned that up and replaced with a 1000uf 16v :-

Didnt realise i could only attach 10 so no image of the repair to sound , Its just a replacement cap so not missing much

Fired her up and all audio is back up and running !!

All good and fixed. This board wants a proper bath so I will do that in due course , If you want me to post how I clean them then feel free to leave a comment and I will document that as well.

So a small ( Probably 2 / 3 Hours or so ) repair , Hopefully proves that not all job have to be complicated and involve schematics, Scope & other test equipment.

Leave a comment if you like , Always nice to see people are actually looking at these.

Dave.

My method is wash in the bath with a slow flow rinse via a bath shower head and to dry off using a car air dryer like a metro vac
sidekick, this is great for expelling out any moisture from PCB boards especially under through hole mounted chips.

Mine involves water and is always controversial !

Why are the images not showing one here ?? Have i done it wrong ??

Going to redo it as not working on my mobile either !

Dave.

Water is fine but shifting it off the board in the quickest possible time is the key before oxidation or rust issues can set in hence using the Metro Sidekick is the cheapest and closest method of using compressed air on a PCB board.

Yeh i been doing it this way for many years , no compressor (no wear to put one now) i am afraid or metro sidekick so it good old 'swinging it hard' and 7 days in airing cupboard. I will post my way next week.

Good work Dave. I always think doing a close visual inspection is vital before even starting any repair. Your repair also goes to show the importance of checking/dumping eproms as well.

It’s nice sometimes to have a nice an easy repair (I always seem to get lucky with PacMan pcbs, I’ve only ever replaced bad ram and sockets on them :)).

Thanks for posting the repair log.
