CRT Monitors

So, what's the general state of play on CRT monitors. Specifically 19" - is supply drying up?

Are we at the point where any worker is a keeper no matter what it is and what condition it's in?

I need to decide what to do with my Robotron.

I have the original MTC-900 (not 900E). It works but the picture is a little gloomy and groggy. I can get a nice crisp picture but then it's too dark, or I can get it bright enough then the focus is sh*t.

Now obviously I've not done any work on it yet. I've not even cleaned the black fur that's coating everything (apart from the front of the tube I'm not that stupid). I need a CR-24 adapter to test the life of the tube and contemplate whether it needs a boost or not (see my wanted post).

Now, on the other hand I have a brand new NOS WG-79XX (no idea exactly what) moinitor manufactured September 2003. Fired it up tonight for the first time and thankfully (considering what I paid for it!) it works perfectly and as you'd expect has a stunning picture. I've had to modify the Roby cab slightly to fit it, but it does fit. And the cab has no wiring so that's not a problem as I'll be making my own wiring anyway.

So what do I do? Sell the 900 after tarting it up? Keep it as a spare? Sell the NOS WG?

I do need money quite badly at the moment but all the same I'm very reluctant to let go of the NOS monitor. It goes lovely with my NOS 14" Polo

I dont think there that hard to find,NOS ones are pretty hard to find ,but still appear from time to time.
if u need money sell the NOS,Im sure the 900 once rebuilt it will be much healthier,ive capped all mine and they seem good,soo much better after a re-cap,bars,too light/dark etc before

all mine have been rebuilt/capped reflowed etc even the vectors,there sweet

id take the old one if you decide to let it go,as-is too

if your gonna keep the roby id put the NOS in,but thats me

Yeah, I think I need to clean up the 900 first before making any rash decisions, and the key point is am I going to keep the Roby or not? It was always bought as a keeper which is why I bought the NOS monitor for it (not much change out of £400 for that monitor!) but I keep looking at it every now and then and thinking "over 18 months and it's not been touched. done up with that monitor it's £1500"

It would seriously help if I could get my bloody control panel back and some Wico sticks!!!

I certainly don't think I would scrap it since it works. I know I've got some MTC-9000 chassis' in the loft. They've been stored for 10 years now but I remember at least one of them works (or had HV at least)

You can always look into tube transplanting. tb Lilley has had experience of this with a defender cab.

Basically you look for a donor TV tube with the right CRT socket and Then swap the yoke over and set up convergence - yes, sounds way simpler than it is but a good poke around at the local recycling centre and second hand shops should yield a result.

In theory, we can indefinitely keep a chassis running but a tube has a finite lifespan.

Half the problem is the space if I'm honest. I'll see if I can make some room under a pin or something. Or maybe next time Bazfish is round I might be able to lug it into the loft

I struggled to find a 19" crt tv recently. Last year there seemed to be plenty about but almost everyone had upgraded now and scrapped their old ones.

The local tip (sorry, council recycle centre) is a good source of 19" CRT TVs - depends on the set up, but at mine all the TVs need to be placed (by punters) in a big shipping container. In theory, it is possible, allegedly, to drop some crap off at main tip then have a rummage in the telly container on the way out ...
