Got a Data i/o with unipak 29b on my bench today.

It blew up within minutes of turning it on. Smoke was coming out of the air ventilation and so I turned it off. Funny enough, it looked like it was still working when I turned it off.

First thing I did was removed the Unipak.

Top shell was held together by 4 Philips screws on each corner of the base.

Top cover removed. Cannot see anything burnt yet!

Another 5 screws holding the power supply module to the base unit.

And then lastly removed power and earth connector

Still no signs of burning...although the smell was almost unbearable. Using the most underated test equipment in the trade (my nose) I sniffed out the burn smell. It came from somewhere in this area of the unit.

Removing the power entry module revealed it's secret!

Nasty!

Cleaned up the mess and installed a new FN-370 power entry module making sure I connected the wires as I found it.

Turned it on and just constant beeping sounds.... Then realise it wouldn't initialise without the unipak installed.

Installed Unipak and now it's all working again abeit on the smelly side. Whole room still smells of burnt electrolytic fluids.

Talking to a good buddy revealed that this is a common issue with these things. Highly recommended replacing the power entry module if you haven't done so already.

Great write up, thanks.
I'll order one and do mine as part of preventative maintenance rather than having to clean up the mess after the fact, or worse.
