Can anyone recommend a decent heat gun and desoldering gun for removing chips.

I only dabble in basic repairs so don't really want to fork out hundreds for a Hakko!

Any advice welcomed.

This is the one I use and its good , Does need cleaning after each use though (They all do though) :-

80W Desoldering Station 230V 480C Duratool 600mm HG High Performance FREE P&P 5051259165465 | eBay

I have a multi for rework but again this one will do :-

220V 858D Soldering Repair Desoldering Iron Station Hot Air Rework SMD Tool 701160661499 | eBay

As said I dont have this one but mine is simular.

Some will tell you that you need to spend a fortune , I disagree with these people as I am the same as you and dont use it day in and day out and I certainly dont have 1000's to spend like some people.

Hope this helps,

Dave.

+1

Use the same set up. Just remember to regularly clean the desoldering station.

I've had one of those Duratool ones for about ten years now and it is still doing well. Nice to see they are still being made, means I can still get new nozzels and filters. Check CPC first, sometimes a bit cheaper than ebay although remember their prices are ex vat.

All that said, I've been using an old spring loaded solder sucker this weekend. If you get a good one, they can produce perfectly satisfactory results, just takes a bit of practice.

Yeah, i've used a spring loaded sucker and solder wick for years up until now. Always done the job albeit very slowly.

The rework heat gun is really what I need to replace a couple of DIPs
