Dodgy Outrun 2 in Minehead

Visited an arcade on Minehead sea front today. Had a Daytona 2 twin running CRTs which was quite nice to see. There was also an Outrun 2 twin, but even at distance it looked a little ‘off’. On closer inspection the dash was wrong and the wheel was massive, like the truck driving game. I’ve seen the Chinese knockoff Outrun 2 machine online but never seen one in person - this was clearly it. The intro was a video clip playing and the resolution/frame rate was really low. And when it flashed ‘insert coin’ it was also saying ‘press enter’ so obviously a mod of the pc version of Outrun 2 SP Coast to Coast.

I had a go out of interest and the steering was rubbish! Zero response from the wheel for 90% of the rotation then minimal steering on full lock. Made it hard to play and impossible to enjoy. Link play was possible but it said ‘waiting for LAN’ which was another nod to the pc version underneath. I suppose if the steering worked it would be playable but it’s worth giving this a miss.

Looks like Initial D/ Max Tune size wheel. The Chinese copies i’ve seen previously were almost acceptable cab wise but ran the console outrun 2 game.

Took a pic of my max tune and outrun2 cabs (as they are next to each other) for comparison of wheel size…..

How much rotation did the wheel have or didn't you check

The initial D wheel rotation is cool but not so good to play outrun 2 though

Those Cabs could make good quick Teknoparrot setups but they shouldn't be in an arcade for paying public

It was more than 270 degrees, maybe initial D rotation. What’s that, about 540?

The surprising thing was the lack of response right up until the very end of the rotation. It was like driving a truck.

And when it did respond there wasn’t enough rotation left to turn more than about a quarter turn on a proper wheel. The other side played the same so I figured it must just be badly made rather than broken/faulty.

Something like that, 540

The mechanism is really cool and would be really cool if you make an electric controlled lock to alter from 270 to 540

Wonder what ohm pots that outrun fake has
