what exactly is the problem with smart meters, it just tells you what you are using and how much it costs does it not?

its not changing your tariff or what you are paying
Version 1 were dicks. V 2 hopefully ok 😆 EDF paying me £300 for them being fitted, something not right!

My Ohme Home Pro charger started to get SIM errors. They came out and replaced it today, took about 5 mins.

All in all it took 10 days and was pretty easy to sort. I could still use it as a dumb charger in the meantime.

they just come and installed one for me no idea who, but the bills havent really gone up much and now i can track what i am spending, am i missing something with the hate for smart meters?

"How fucking dare you tell me how much i spend on gas and electricity, i don't want to see that!"

What they charge us is a completely different conversation, does it stem from the water meter thing, i know that was a big kick in the nuts for a lot of households?

I don't have a smart meter nor do I want one yet, I may get one if I decide to get solar roof/panels and batteries fitted. Ideally I want to be able to run from batteries during power cuts and the like before I even consider going electronic.

The energy company I'm currently with also keeps sending me emails/texts/phone calls telling me my meter is out of date/end of life and it needs replacing. I just ignore them and they keep pestering with their automated bot phone calls and auto generated texts and emails.

Previously I was with Tonik energy, they went under and I got moved to Scottish Power. After a while Scottish Power kept spamming me every day with multiple texts so I moved providers. Scottish Power called me afterwards and asked me why I moved providers, I told them it was because they kept spamming me for smart meters.

The Scottish Power guy tried to convince me that I must have one and I politely educated him that I have the right to decline a meter which he reluctantly agreed was the case, the cheeky git then said they would love to keep me as a customer and they would take me off list of people they try to contact, he ended up just hanging up when he realised I just wasn't interested in staying with them.

Working in IT and seeing electronics fail on a daily basis I'd rather keep it simple and there's nothing more simple than the current system which shows me how much gas and electric I've used via a spinning disc and mechanical numerical display.

Probably a few in Spain/Portugal wishing they had that setup the other day

I was thinking about it but don't fancy exploding Chinese Batteries burning all me Arcade Machines so Li-Ion I wouldn't be keen on or would have to be Panasonic ones

Built my own battery from no name LifePo4 cells bought off Ali Express and have been running it for about 3 years now with no issues, recently bought some bigger cells to make a newer one with more capacity.

I swapped to smart meters about three years ago. The first revisions couldn't have the smart function transferred between providers which made them pointless, so I waited for version 2 ( possibly just firmware).

I was given the little tracker thing you can install and have on your kitchen side board or something but I binned it as they are cheap and crap and just continued with my life as normal.

I now don't ever have to provide meter readings, and if I am interested in my energy usage I can use the British Gas app and see my monthly, weekly and daily usage stats for gas and electricity.

I cannot see any reason not to have one, unless you're a conspiracy plonker. Nothing has changed, my life continues as normal, and if on the off chance I do want to check usage, such as after a day of having everything on, I can.

I'm having a smart meter fitted as I'm told I have to because of the economy 7 radio signal being turned off next month. They cancelled the first appointment but gave me 40 quid credit as compensation.

As I'm in a mobile signal black spot, the meter can't connect, so I'm still going to have to submit monthly readings, so there's no real benefit for me.

The reason not to have one is purely that the companies can switch you off and/or to prepay (which is the same net effect if you can't afford it) if you get into the shit. With a conventional meter inside the building that's a LOT more difficult for them to do.

All is lovely and hunky dory until a couple of things go wrong and your life goes down the toilet, hopefully briefly of course. Not being able to see or be warm cos the corp machine wants paying right now will add to the problems.

Not being conspiracist about it, it's just a sad fact that the corporate behaviour in this regard is not regulated well enough.

I have nothing against the tech (aside from being over-engineered and mind-bogglingly under-performing more generally) but I do have a lot against what that enables, and who it enables it for.
