No.

What happens is that if you click the 'Like' icon (and, of course you have a FB profile) then a post appears on your facebook page saying (for example):

fblike.png

Where both the title of the threa, and UKVAC are both clickable links (the thread one goes to the thread) which anyone can then click on and go to - provided of course, they are a member of UKVAC. If not they can't.

Nah, we wouldn't do anything like that without a BIG notification and change to the forums T's & C's. Data protection act and all that...

Hi Graham,

As Martin says we take privacy extremely seriously - you may recall a couple of "fiery" discussions I've kicked off on this topic in the past elsewhere on the 'net :)

The way I understand it is that all of the posts were made by people who knew you needed to be a member of the site to read. So if we suddenly made all these posts available to non-members, we'd be breaking the implicit moral contract we have with our members.

If the time ever comes when a change in this policy is considered then it would absolutely involve our members as you are what make the forum by making the posts. In fact, I give my word (for what that's worth to various people) that I'd not agree to a change in public/private access without consulting our members.

I'll just make another post in a moment which lists which forums are visible to non-members. It's only PlanB I think but I figure keeping it in a separate post is helpful as some may not read this FB related post thinking it's not of interest to them.

cheers

tim

ukvac.com is a constantly evolving place (as you'll see very soon

), and we have decided that it is imperative to reach out and potentially attract new members rather than lock away ourselves in a self-imposed prison. This way the searchbots out there can find us - we've already seen a massive influx of old faces and new with the Facebook like icon so its a benefit to everyone and the best reason for the reversion.

As a point of triviality the forums were all open to guest reading 6 months ago but we experimented with a members only policy and this had just come into effect as Tim became an admin so wasnt aware it was a trial period.

Hehe. How's the customisation going where any post by me written after 22:00 gets surrounded by a header of "Please confirm with a responsible adult that what is written below is correct"?
