Faulty PS4 - worth it?

I've been offered a faulty PS4 with a broken bluray drive for less than a third of the price of a normal PS4. No controller though

Apparently the previous owners child forced a bluray in the drive and a bit
snapped off inside. Not the bluray but a piece of plastic somewhere in
the drive

Now is it worth buying?

I realise that the bluray is married to the console, but the bluray pcb will probably be ok, and might be transferable in future?

No idea if the laser is damaged either

Obviously digital content would still work but not anything from the drive, until it is sorted - if it can be

I have no idea of the extent of the damage until I buy it and open up the drive

What do you guys think?

Also I believe he has spoken to Sony and admitted the damage so, using warranty is out of the question

I'd go for it as long as the security sticker is still intact so you know they haven't broken the system beyond repair. Sounds like it should be quite an easy fix or like you say a simple drive swap in the future.

I would definitely go for it, don't forget all games are available as digital download as well as physical disk.

I still say go for it, but have you seen the prices of digital downloads

If you buy digital downloads only you'll have spent what you saved on the console in no time. I honestly don't know how Sony expect to sell any digital downloads at those prices.

surely the 'piece of plastic' is findable and glue-able?

Exactly what I thought. It might be glue-able. It depends on how bad it is and what the part actually does. Again, without opening and looking I am purely guessing

With it being loose inside it *might* have damaged the laser also, but I suspect it might be possible to get replacements

I agree.i really wanted to go digital this time but the greedy gits never learn.they would sell triple the amount if they lowered the price.a win win situation for everybody.

Lower £40's if you've got the patience of a saint and the nose of a bloodhound. More like £50 - £55 if your Mrs decides on a Saturday afternoon that she want's to play two player Knack and the only place around is Argos!

[EDIT] Controllers are overpriced too! What was wrong with charging £30???

Good news and bad news.

Good news. I've taken the PS4 apart and found the loose part and removed it. The part doesn't look like it has snapped off

Bad news. For the life of me I cannot find the location of where this part goes. It's labelled as "F2-14". It clearly goes somewhere, but I'm just not sure where. It has grooves in it, so it must slot in somewhere. I don't expect Sony will help me with this one

The problem I have is not many people have cracked these drives open, due to them being brand new, so I'm a bit stuck

That be why!

You could try looking for a PS4 tear down website or video and see if you get lucky spotting the part.

The warranty was already invalid, as the previous owner had admitted to Sony that he caused the damage.

They wanted £175 to replace it with a refurb unit, so that is how I ended up with it.

I bought it knowing that.

Correct :)

I know I can fix this.

I have looked at all the teardown images/videos I can find.

The only images I've found is where someone changes the laser on the unit. I've studied those images and I still cannot see where this part goes.

I shall persevere. I'm sure I'll get there. Then I'll post this stuff up for other people with bluray PS4 issues

I guess not? Surely that's too obvious!

I wouldn't want to risk a game disk to try it in case it spins out of control but a cheap DVD maybe.

I've just found a video with someone that has the same issue, but it looks like they don't know either, and I can't understand what they are saying
smiley36.gif

It looks like they leave the part out and the drive still functions, so maybe worth doing that
