Bought this cab off Martin;

weirdly the bezel is upside down (rotated 180 degrees) so the monitor was partially hidden.

Not had much time with it as only got in in the house last night but managed to get the back door off without damaging anything other than the lock;

Some speculation on the monitor but turns out its an electrohome;

tube is clean, what looks like splatter is reflection of stones in pavement;

AR equivalent... 'big blue' and rectifier diodes on this rather than the 'power brick' pcb;

Game PCB more familiar looking;

Overall the cab is very tidy, the glass bezel is showing some signs of delamination and there are some marks where the coin doors have been forced and the back door attempted to be forced at some point. The CP is a little rusty and the dag is flaking on the monitor. Other than that its really clean and looks really smart with its shiny glass marquee.

Preliminary testing reveals the transformer is dead; doesn't blow any fuses but gives no outputs. Could be as simple as a loose connection... and that's as far as I got.

Ha! That turned out to be quite the buy with the Quadrascan monitor in there and bootleg Asteroids same.layout as Atari.

Awesome.

You should have this working in no time Rick.

got home and tried to figure out the wiring, found a dead end probably a missing interlock.

rejigged some stuff fingers crossed plugged in and got a hum form the transformer :D

checked the AC from the transformer and it was all within 10% of the labelled voltages without a load. nice.

hooked up the DC supply board and the edge connector read 5.15v with no load. nice.

hooked up the monitor and got neck glow and spot killer LED. nice!

so deep breath and plugged in the game pcb...

NICE :D

then the spot killer kicked in BOO!, but gave the edge connector a bit of a clean and reseated the pcb, and it plays!

its got a display fault; more pics to follow, but bloody hell, after so much time it actually works and is playable.

im gobsmacked :)

fantastic! I would love an Asteroids but the size of the cab really puts me off, that is a really lovely looking example of the game, cant believe it has basically survived intact for so long!

jumping vectors, seems to be limited to vertical distortion.

Was reading up on asteroids troubleshooting here;

http://arcarc.xmission.com/Tech/Asteroid%20Tech/asteroidsrepair.html

specifically this scan hosted there;

debug-ast.gif

looked pretty much like what my problem was. looked at the PCB and the DACs were socketed, so 1st test was to swap them, which resulted in this;

clym.jpg

the vertical distortion was replaced with horizontal distortion, bingo! looks like a faulty DAC. Ive got a completely dead asteroids PCB with the same DAC so decided to borrow it;

fixed! :D

I should really buy a lottery ticket now, feeling pretty damn lucky

toplight also fired up after a new ballast was fitted.

next stop is to clean up the CP and think im going to replace the button microswitches with leafs.

may tackle the flaky glass bezel after that but have a feeling my luck will run out, possibly best to leave it alone.

Outstanding. Basically, this just worked to all intents! Awesome! Are there many / any other cabs that similarly just came on?
