Fruit machine boot problem

Hi all newbie here 👍
Managed to grab hold of a fruit machine the other week with a fault. It seems to be stuck in a boot loop? All the lights turn on but no lcd display. I'm starting to lean towards it being a mpu fault but wanted others opinions? I've tried the usual things it says online, ive reseted the cards and all seems snug. I dont know if the previous owner messed with the dip switches and he seemed the type to just mess about with things and I have no manuals to even check. Thanks all for taking your time to read and reply.

Which one is it?
I had a deal or no deal recently all 7 power rail indicators were lit as was the red reset LED. Turned out to be the reset button that was electrically connected and holding the CPU in a reset state.

Hello SassMate
Thanks for replying!
I've attached a photo of the mpu in question. Its a scorpion 5 running genie jackpot. As you state that happened with yours sounds very similar. I have all 7 green leds on and stay lit even when board is rebooting but red led goes on for about 2 seconds and then off for about 3 seconds. With that going on all the other lights go on and off but no lcd display so no error codes which tells me its potential stuck in some sort of boot loop.

As mentioned above, we need to know what machine it is. Could also be a power supply issue, especially if it’s a BellFruit.

Is the red reset led steady lit or is flashing? Not illuminating at all? It should light up when you first power up then go out.

All the 7 power leds should be steady lit aswell although this doesn't guarantee you have the correct voltage. I'd try measuring voltage on plug A first. Measure them with the plug attached to the board then with it removed. Top row of the plugs is thee vcc, bottom row is grounds. Not all of the plug is used so missing wires is normal.

Hello, I've measured the voltage on the plug and all seems in normal range and no drop when machine reebots. Battery seems good and no leak on the board and voltage seems ok. going to bite the bullet and get one this weekend and give that ago as at a loss lol 😆

you should have +13.5 V | +13.5 V | +44 V | +44 V | +5 V | Normally not connected | +13.5 V | +13.5 V | −12 V | +24 V from left to right across the top row of pins on plug A. Check them with plug A disconnected and connected. a short on the board will affect the readings.

I have seen LED's glowing on scorp 5 boards and bad voltage on that rail. Bear in mind, -12v is minus 12v. Make sure you're multimeter leads are the right way round.
It does sound like the watchdog circuit is kicking in and pulling the CPU into a reset state.
Check for the presence of 3.3v on the board. This is generated on board rather than fed from the PSU. Check this and the 5V rail when the CPU resets to make sure neither are sagging.

Run the back of your hand over the board after it's been turned on for a bit, check nothing is getting warm.
when you say all the other lights come on and go off do you mean the lights on the game board?
If so then measure the 44v line. during reset. This is the rail that powers the LEDs on the game board.
If you mean the green LEDs on the MPU tell me which ones go out.
Disconnect lamps, reels, hopper, everything you can including note taker if it's fitted and the LCD screen. If it stops resetting power off and plug one in then test again.
To go much further, I'd want to take a look at some of the pins on the CPU with a scope. mainly RTSI and RTS0 RTSI is the signal to reset the cpu. RTSO is the signal the cpu sends out to put the ram in a known state etc. I'd also make sure the clock pin is getting a nice health 40mhz signal.
Also check all the VCC and grounds on the CPU too.

Also just check the VARTA battery has around 3.6v in it. If it's flat it wont put the CPU in reset but it will let you know it needs replacing.
If you replace it, fly wire it away from the board. they tend to leak and ruin boards.
