I've already had an unannounced, sneeky stream on twitch to see how it works as I'm a noob. The quality is not fantastic (crappy webcam that came with my tv), and I've managed to capture the sound delay between my playing and the stream output. It was a very scrappy game, lost 2 lives early on, but recovered with a final 220K.
Here be a link if you get insomnia :

As for how long it took, I don't know for certain. The stream above came in at just under 50min and is half my best so I'm guessing it was around 1hr 40mins long. I think the length of the games is the greatest enemy for me now, as the game just turns into an excercise in concentration from this point.
I think Galaxian has been pretty well tipped out as there isn't really that much to it really. It's mainly down to old-fashioned practice and learning how the enemys behave until it becomes instinctual. As in a lot of games, you have to learn to read the whole screen and plan your actions.
Never beat yourself up by going for the yellow flagship 800 bonus. The risk/reward ration is just not worth it - much better playing to play conseratively and stay alive. Think of it instead as a Pacman power pill and not bonus points. Never shoot it in the convoy it you can avoid it; that's just a waste. There's a rhytmn to the waves that speeds up making the enemies more aggressive0 shooting the yellow enemies throttles this back a bit as well as stopping them firing for a few precious seconds. Use this to hammer away at the pack, preferably the extreme columns. Keeping hte convoy narrow lessens the severity of hte enemies attack patterns
Don't waste bullets by shooting aimlessly at the pack. Always aim. A missed shot leaves you very vunerable to the swooping aliens. Also, don't shoot at the convoy when there are charging aliens, you might need the bullet to save yourself.
The purple enemies are the most dangerous, if you get a choice always prioritise destroying these first. The waves are a lot easier I find when most of these are gone. Learn to accurately pick them off mid-flight. They aren't that difficult to hit even when they are moving fast at extreme angles. They're a larger target than they look as you can lead your shot slightly and they will run into the side of your bullet.
Regarding romset versions. I'm no expert on this but from my understanding Namco set 1 plays the same as the Midway romset. Namco set 2 has more extreme bullet angles and is therefore much harder to play. If you had a go at the Galaxian at The New Frontier or at Playexpo in Manchester (the one next to Op Wolf), I think that was the set 2 version. (That was my excuse anyway!)
If I get the chance tonight, I may have a go at another stream. No
promises that I will hit anywhere near my best, as I'm still not really pretty sporadic with my scoring. I usually rage restart if my first ship is lost before 50000. My average game is roughly in the range 200-250K. Also,
you'll have to chat amongst yourselves, I'm nowhere near good enough to
multitask whilst playing. I may also have my dressing gown on, bit don't worry I'll be decent!
