[ukvac] Game on
Hey all

Well I just got back in from the exhibition and I just wanted to tell you
all that its FANTASTIC!) Andy was there being extremely busy running
around fixing things! And I managed to finally meet Greg Mott after not
managing to get down for MottMeet 2002 ) Anyway... The exhibition...
Yeah it was great! Although I've never seen so many pissed off spouses in
one concentrated area before... SCARY!!! Like PMT hell!!!

A few highlights for me were the Bomberman multi player Saturn set-up thingy
upstairs, where I got whooped by lots of eight year olds and me and my mates
hogged it for ages! Well its first one to three wins out of 6 (or 8 max)
players! Funniest bit was being told by a little kid what I should be doing
when playing Ms. Pacman when I got past around 30,000+ points on one life...
There's some great bits which I won't tell you about, but the machines all
look fab and I'm sure everyone will enjoy it. Just to whet your appetites!

Pobster
PS. By the way... Cheers Andy for the bits!

One last question,

Is this a cut down version of the original exhibition that started at the Barbican?

Thanks

The show left London to tour with only a few arcade machines, the
majority went back to their owners. At the first venue Barbican,
London, there was :

robotron
ms pacman
Galaxian
centipede
donkey kong
crystal castles
asteroids
defender
tempest
starwars
tron
space invaders upright
space invaders cocktail
space invaders Part 2cocktail
Battlezone
Mortal Kombat 2

display models : pong, computer space x2

...

The show then went off with only 1 computer space, pong, all 3 space
invaders, starwars and tron to Edinburgh... I did not travel with the
show after this as i wanted to concentrate on my own interests.

From Edinburgh the show went to Helsinki-Finland, then
Tilburg-Holland, then Lille-France... Then i got back into the tour
and we went to Tel-Aviv Israel.

While the show was running in Israel i went ahead to the states a few
times and purchased machines from Auctions and private sales in
Baltimore, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Winston Salem etc to re-populate
the arcade section. Everything was brought to one point in
Philadelphia through a good friend of mine, and with help from a bunch
of the east-coast collectors, then it was all shipped to Chicago....

...Where the show went to after Tel-Aviv... then after Chicago IL, it
went to San Jose CA, the Chicago venue wanted the show back again so
we went back to Chicago, then after that we went to Seattle, WA. The
show has now just opened in London, making it the 11th Venue.

Now that the show owns all the machines bar one, it is back in london
4 and a half years later, with another decent selection of machines.

When we finish in London, the show may go into storage for a few
months, unless Melbourne (Australia) signs in the next month or so,
then we'll be off there. We are then booked to be in Bangkok Thailand
in August next year... from there, Vancouver in Canada sounds likely.

While the show is open in london, there are plenty more venues booked
to see the show and make decisions.

This is the never ending touring show... and we intend to expand the
arcade collection slightly over the next few months.

I just go out with the show to install and de-install it, i do not
stay with the show wherever it is. I maintain the machines as best i
can remotely, by sending parts along to replace and fit, or knowing
people locally to help out, or i just fix any problems on the next
install period. So far, we have had a very lucky run of it, with some
machines not giving any problems at all, and the rest only having a
few minor niggles to sort out. The key was buying decent machines to
start with ;)

enjoy.

No it isn't, it is as you remember it, plus more. There have been a
lot of game changes, and additions, new consoles etc.

The only things we don't have any more are the majority of the
artists' commissions, which i doubt any of you will cry over :)

The show changes from venue to venue, depending on the taste of what
the venue wants to display, and what they physically have room for. We
are only showing a third of the artworks that we had at the barbican,
but 100% of the videogames plus more are there.

Indeed nice one, they had something on the news the other day
about it. I've recorded it on the Sky+ and I'll try and mpeg
it off via DVD recorder - just a short piece, but WOW....Classic
Arcades on the news, doesn't get much better than that -
unless a mass-bundle broke out with Ukvac & Jamma+ ers of course ;-)

Cheers,

Hi Guys,

Some (crap) pics of this years Game On.

http://www.centuri.net/misc/gameon2006/

All cabs were working fine... i hate to say it but P-man has done a great job there.

It was well busy, the queue out of the door was about a mile going into the depths of the kensington underground.

I had booked a lot for 11:30 and got there at 11:00 but didnt get in till 12:15

Well worth it, the Missus's kids enjoyed it, even managed some high scores :)

Great photos.

Good to see the kids who weren't even born back then crowding round the Star Wars!

That space invaders projection game is brilliant!

Andy

it looks like it is very popular.

its a shame that ravs retrokade idea didn't get off
the ground. if it could find a suitable venue
(probably have to be in London) i'm sure it would
prove very popular!

to be honest the only thing i would have to play at
Game On is that starwars machine...as a kid it was my
absolute favorite!

most of the others i can play on my mame machine
(apologies for using bad language!)...yes i know there
is a difference when playing on the real machine ;)
but wouldnt not have such a wow factor as playing a
real vector game these days.

Shame on you! there are 140 other playable videogames there! its not
just 20 arcade machines in a big room :)

We don't have Tempest, but would like to add one if anyone has one for
sale, also looking for a decent Defender and anything else that
tickles my fancy :)

Tempest was Atari's first colour vector game, Lunar Lander was atari's
first vector game.

The first vector game was Vectorbeam Space Wars, first colour vector
game was Sega Space Fury.

The show isn't about 'firsts', while they get a look in and do
feature, thats not what the show is aimed at. The 'early arcades'
section of the show is to give an idea of the sort of games that could
be found in an arcade of the classic era. The DOT, Starwars and
Maneater are to show arcade game spin-offs from the movies, Maneater
being the first spinoff (released to cash in on Jaws).

I just heard today that Game On got 7000 visitors in the first 4 days
of opening, which is staggering. (considering in San Jose they only
had 20,000 people in 4 months)

enjoy.

A retro arcade in London would be fantastic. A mix of
machines up to R-type era would be top (many years ago
I came across a tiny arcade in Italy, Tonale - which
in one small room had R-type, Blacktiger, pacland,
pacmania, rampage, indiana jones etc all packed in
together - fantastic).

The trocadero by piccadily is a sprawling mess, and
all the small arcades dotted about in london just have
cruddy driving/ lightgun cabs.
