So I had a garage filling up with parts and machines and decided I needed a proper place to house them. Initially it was going to be a conversion on the garage (even had skylights put in when the roof was changed to remove asbestos) , but it is a single garage detached from the house and my wife pointed out that I would need a workshop. So the garage is now ear marked as the storage / workshop and I needed to find an outside building. The whole log cabin idea seemed to sit well and I was having a look around.
Eventually I decided on a 5m * 4m cabin to house some machines, TV / Media for the kids etc.
Below is a pictorial walk through of the build to date. Hope you enjoy any questions fire away.
1. First off the base, I had a builder come in to do this, in a cold February
2. It was sited was towards the end of the garden next to the existing shed
3. Rather than a concrete base we went for the hardcore and plastic webbing arrangement.
4.The log cabin arrived, holy cow that was a lot of wood, I was installing myself and I had to move all this plus all the roof and insulation boards from the front to the back of the house.
5.Construction was quick, this was day one and I was lucky with some good weather for Feb, also had the help (once he got out of bed) from my teenage son
6. The roof took for ever with the tongue and groove, on top of this was the insulation and then particle board (came glued together already). At this time I installed lighting drops, light switch and lighting feed. The insulation sat on top of this.
7. Roof shingles (OMG my knees after we did this, hammering soooo many nails)
8. View from the upstairs
9. So the inside has been fitted out, went for the cheap laminate flooring as it is easy to clean. The floor is also insulated between the bearers, then tongue and groove, fibre boarding and then the laminate. Being a sparky in my old life the electrical fit out was done by me. Electrical skirting trunking around the outside, four mini spotlights on a dimmer and two lots of multi coloured LED lighting.
Installed 2KW convector heater with frost protection and a cool / heat AC unit. I have wired internet to the garage and then Powerline into the cabin so full internet for the TV, XBOX and Sky etc. and a access point for WiFi.
Also Google Home Mini that also gives voice control to turn the machines on and off using smart plugs.
Finally I fitted an alarm.
A few things left to do finish around the edges with some decorative shingle, some extra posters, a neon sign 'Back to the Arcade' from Fleabay on the way and then get the Star Wars & SCI cabs finished and in.
