A while ago I bought a bunch of pcb's from an old arcade and since then I have repaired several of them and have learned a lot about arcade pcb's. One of them has been waiting for me to look at and was begging for some attention. A Ghosts 'n goblins bootleg. I know bootlegs are sometimes frowned upon, but try to find an original gng for a decent price... Also I consider bootlegs a part of history so these too deserve to be saved and preserved. This bootleg is actually very good and as far as I can see a 1-1 copy of the original.
It was in pretty bad state though, a lot of corrosion so before even building a jamma adapter and powering it up I decided to do some maintenance first.

You can see the roms a totally gone from rust and I removed one of the roms and several of the legs broke off. Also the cpu and the 2 sound ic's have corrosion and some of the ram and some of the logic ic's.

So first things first and aways with these sockets, and out with the corroded ic's.

Cleans up nicely!

This was the end result after removing all corroded ic's/sockets and before cleaning up the board.

Nice progress , looks like lots more need removing and replacing though. Lots of rust.

Take your time !! (Wish someone would tell me that , i have foofed a few by running in and rushing).

Next step was cleaning up the edge connector, this had an adapter soldered on to some of the fingers (already removed) and was looking pretty bad. I used a dremel with a 'sponge' like tool that has and abrasive action to remove the dirt/grime/corrosion and it also removed old solder. What was good is that it had no effect on the copper leaving nice and clean copper fingers to re-tin.

Better than factory

Gave the board a good clean and fitted new socket, now looks great again and I am starting to get my hopes up I can save this board...
