So from the manual it looks like the standard settings are:

3 Lives
Bonus lives at 60,000 and every 80,000
Difficult

I tried using these settings in Mame, but for extra lives it only has

30,000 and every 60,000
40,000 and every 70,000

What are other people using in Mame?

Arcade Club tend to have the difficulty settings at their easiest levels, at least thats what ive found on the games I play there.

Ok thanks...on easiest I've got > 270,000.

I've recently cleared my hiscores and set to 'average' and so far my best is 160,750...

Not my experience at all David. Time Pilot is set to easier I think. Truxton II set to harder. Most other stuff that I play seems about right to me.

James posted somewhere once, possibly on ukvac, when i was asking about the difficulty levels on something at AC, that he likes to set them on the easiest setting because he always used to dislike how arcade operators back in the day liked to do the opposite and set everything on hardest to maximise revenue.
mr do, dig dug and frogger are definitely on the easiest level. I mentioned to you recently I thought that 1942 seemed easier than mine which is at at TG settings..... dig dug has a crazy volume of extra lives, but i quite like that to be honest.

i woudnt be surprised if the majority of games at AC are just set at the difficulty level they get them at, and they dont make a concious effort to alter them, unless someone requests it.

I think it's the norm to leave settings as they are, unless if the game is playing too difficult.
Would be easier to work out the difficulties if more older games had a dip switch setting screen.
