Symptom: monitor very slow to warm up. Picture terribly blurred. Gradually improves. After 30 mins runs fine with nice sharp picture.

Resolution: Dry joint on focus wire within neck socket. Reflow solder.

Result: nice sharp picture from the get go.

Edit: real fix here: Linktb lilley2013-07-25 17:30:16

It's a heady cocktail of boredom, curiosity, and being too tight to pay someone to do it for me. Also, my disasters outweigh my successes by a ratio of about 10:1 ....... All good fun though. Mostly .... I think my biggest disaster was holding the handle of a very hot soldering iron between clenched teeth (both hands occupied) which then slipped and scorched a chunk of my face off. Not content with that, I then caught the iron before it hit the work top and burnt several fingers. How I laughed - all the way to the local burns unit ......

Hmmm, I'm not convinced a dry joint would have a lot of effect on several thousand volts with a very low current, would it? It would have to be pretty much the focus wire fallen off to drop the voltage enough to cause a change I think.

I'm wondering if the heat from your soldering iron has driven out some moisture/dirt or something that was providing a path to ground and causing the loss of focus, rather than just a bad solder joint.

Yeah - I absolutely agree with that. Doubt it was cold joint now - cant have been as there's now a very clean joint but the problem is back. So I reckon you're spot on.
