As. Young boy of around 12 I spent summers at my grandma’s home on splash point Rhyl . My older sister had left uni by then but in her gap year she was Ronald Seldon’s Nanny to his kids Gary and Robert and she doubled as a bingo caller money changer in Seldons bingo on Rhyl promenade arcades and I hung around a lot

It’s where I first met Sol Parker a hero who sat near the entrance to his Black Cat arcade (used to be located where it’s HB palace now) and he often chased me and my local mates out as we could fleece the Tooty fruity light up drop in skill big penny machines

The big brittania penny could be spun as it entered the slot and with practice the cherry line was easy to win the plum line also easy to get symbol 1 & 4 also spinning coin meant it almost always lit a symbol and not get to the all lost at the base ..

When I becam an op myself we acquired some on big 10p & small new 1p I kept one of them from the 70s I have near the front door at home … all the parcel deliveries and visitors who are old enough recall these seaside favourites ? They say !

Retired this from Lyon’s holiday camp arcade in the mid 80s as we lost tender to Les Harker for two years and had no space at Sunnyvale , Cambria , or other park arcades and we had 2 of each anyway!

Still enjoy popping the odd penny in but not so easy spinning the smaller coin .. not been emptied in years so prob has thousands of 1p coins in the huge box below?

Is the Dunes still going then now ?? I not been there for a while.

Dave.

Afaik probably , but not been past myself for a year or two now . Paul lives in Florida and has Dunes as a summertime hobby . only has a very mercenary approach opens around May as it gets busy and soon as August bank holiday passes he boards up for Winter and disappears … people who take on his cafe and pub bar seasonally hardly ever take it on for a second year … bit sad of a guy!

I would maybe spend a couple of hours there on various jobs and he would say great what do I owe you and paid me then as he walked out would say …..(bit like columbo the tv detective). “ right I’m off now but …. just one more thing…while you are here can you check the 2 p changer levels and maybe fill them from the pushers coin boxes, and I forgot the arm wrestler is not crediting ? “ etc etc knowing I would sort them before I left as I had access to his keys in the show bar office hoping I would forget the extra work time by the next week or so ? Then if they turned a long job would try barter my fee down .. what a knob? He was ..

He just enjoys counting the takings as he manages to get some good cabaret acts in the show bar odd weekends and right in heart of Towyn it does get heaving for beer sales! Many half captive customers too from the surrounding caravan parks who don’t need walk far drunk !

Now that machine is a blast from the past. My memory isn't good enough to remember which arcade I saw those in?
Could be any of the Rhyl arcades. Premier arcade Colwyn Bay? Golden Goose Pier Colwyn Bay? Golden Goose Rhos on Sea? Or Llandudno arcades?
Edit: Might even have been the Colwyn Bay arcade / funfair that got knocked down when the A55 was built?

I saved a draft new thread but can't find it. How do I retrieve the saved thread please? I don't think I have the head capacity to redo it.

Also, if you need an updated picture of somewhere in Rhyl let me know.
