Hmm that's a tough one, think you need option 3 a mix of both

.
I have a ton of boards to work though and 2 cabs in need of work, just finding the motivation to do either. Never seen the point in being a collector though( I know it ain't up there either).

A horder with a view to play once I actually sort my home out. I figure I may as well buy things as and when I see them while they are affordable and they come up, rather than kick myself a few years down the line. I don't horde crap though, just good stuff.

The poll was specifically designed not to include option 3

I personally wouldn't class that as hoarding. You are buying a cab to fix and play. I would class hoarding as buying a cab that's never likely to be in a playable state

My definition of a hoarder, that is probably far more common than you can imagine (or maybe not - it's easy to imagine round here) is someone that has had the word "No" surgically removed from their vocabulary and therefore has a games room (or two) that is so packed full that you can barely get to the games, let alone ever stand any chance of getting them working and playing them. Never mind the fact that they probably have storage full of them too.

Come on then, own up, you know who you are!!

Typically, a classic tell-tale sign of the hoarder is that they're also in denial, occasionally tweaking a couple of games, getting them so you can play 1 or 2 and doing so for a couple of evenings just to kid themselves the games can be played, before ramming more in and completely negating that effort for another 6 to 12 months.

Wonder how many people that sounds familiar to??

I voted 'Gamer'. I don't really play them much but I have a small amount of quality games, all bar 2 of which are fully working all the time and there's virtually always plenty of room since my games room is also my office. Therefore, I am not a hoarder by any stretch.

If you peek in the loft at the PCBs, well, that's a different story but I suspect it is for most collectors.

I can't stand it when I (for brief transitional periods) can't get to all of my games. Obviously when you've got a new one and are waiting for an old one to go it's sometimes unavoidable at that level.

I also can't stand having a house full of tatty games either as some people seem quite happy to do. All of my machines bar one are in an entirely separate building. It means they don't get played as much but the house looks much nicer for it. The one exception to that is the minty (and pretty damn rare in this country) Tron table-top in the living room.

I am hoping to have the Roby in the house for a bit though before it heads up to the office so I can get some practice in but again, that will be a very, very clean and tidy game.

Mind you, these points aren't really relevant to hoarder / gamer though.

Again agree with what you've put. I think you have a very bad case of hoarding when arcade machines come above basic living conditions

This is just my opinion though as a gamer

I'm sure there are people on the forum that do this, and are quite happy to live that way

I'm a gamer who only hoards spares for my games. I want to be able to keep them all running all the time if at all possible cos I want to be able to play them in the few brief moments of spare time I get these days, fixing them was definitely more fun when I had more time. I've had to turn down games I'd really like just because I don't want to get to the "room full of unplayable games" scenario. The space I have is all I'm ever likely to have (barring a lottery win), I want it as free of clutter as possible.

Dan

P.S that all said I do have 5 games in storage, although some of them are earmarked for my workshop should it ever get built...

I am essentially a hoarder although there is solid reasoning behind my disorder, the things I hoard DO actually end up being used, so more of a re-cycler than a hoarder.

Also 100% hardcore gamer since the age of being able to reach the CP (Maybe 6-7, not a lot to play in '74)

Make your own mind up but I voted hoarder anyway

Andy.

Definitely a gamer, although I guess I've got some tech gear that isn't absolutely essential. BUT, it's useful stuff for my other hobbies which I got into after starting VACing.

I've got a lot of PCBs but my Dad is also into PCB repair so you can see I'm collecting deaders and donors for two (isn't that what some women say when they're preggers and decide they're going to live on cream cakes and Mars bars?
smiley36.gif
)

Plus I'm not OCD about my to-be-fixed PCB stash; I've given plenty of boards & parts away to people who are just starting off or people who need a specific part. I rationalise that if I'm happy to pass stuff on to people who have an immediate need for it then I'm collecting to increase the number of working games out there rather than just being unable to say no.

I draw the line at the hobby affecting other aspects of daily life - I only ever have one cab in the house at a time and they have to look smart enough to fit in. I'd love to bring my Star Wars cockpit in from the garage so I could play it year round, but I don't have a room it would look unobtrusive in, so it stays in the garage until I move house and have a dedicated games room.

It does bug me to see houses jammed full of machines: I'm no clean freak but not being able to use your house because it's solid with dead or rotting cabs seems mental. Like the guy who was featured in Obsessive Compulsive Hoarder on C4 the other night and his 30+ year collection of newspapers (would recommend catching it on C4 On-Demand if you missed it).

But it's whatever makes people happy :)
